  • Octy removal/vacuum

Hi......If the octy is removed how does the carburators get the vacuum to keep the fuel flowing from the tank?

I have a vacuum line that starts from under the tank at the frame and I can't figure out where the other end goes.

There is another vacuum line that comes out of the area where the engine to frame ground strap is and points up toward the battery.....(but not the battery overflow tube) that I can't find the connection point.

I looked all through my factory manual and didn't see any of their connecting points.

What you're seeing are not vacuum lines. The only vacuum lines come from the intake ports between the carbs and the engine, and from the #2 carb to the vacuum advance under the left engine cover.

If you remove the octy, there is no vacuum-operated valve to stop the fuel flow, so you just cap off the vacuum port on the #2 cylinder intake. Fuel flows by gravity only. The hoses you are seeing are vent hoses for the crankcase and middle drive. The crankcase one (rather large hose) connects to the port on the front center of the airbox, between the #2 and #3 carb intake ports. I'm not certain where the proper connection is for the Middle drive vent, since mine doesn't have that one.

That one just ends, open to the air. There's supposed to be a small bracket that holds the end of the hose and goes under the upper airbox bolt. No airbox, no place to attach the bracket...

Thanks....I was hoping my lack of fuel flow from the float housing drain nipples on #1, #2 and #3 carburator had something to do with vacuum, since I couldn't determine where the rubber lines mentioned, went.

The two feed lines to the nipples between 1&2 and 3&4, are filled with gas. Only #4 will drain fuel through the drain on the lower float housing.

Well....back to the drawing board, the carbs make have to come off.

        Thanks again,

Yoour getting slow in your old age Steve, the bracket can still bolt to the same place on the frame as the air box mount bolts, it sill just be tighter to the frame. (Since I pulled a Bikerphil and cut off that top bracket for easier air box removal, mine is mounted just like that.)
