  • oil coming out of exhaust

    1979 xs1100 standard 2h7-0xxx 48000 miles. sat for a while. i have put 35 miles on it.

    compression #1: 150psi #2: 130psi #3: 135psi #4 132psi. after oil leak.

oil is getting by the #2 and/or #3 cylinder. oil is on the 2 & 3 spark plugs. #2 &#3 exhaust go into one tailpipe.

I tore this bike down and rebuilt it. I got a carb off of a 79 special. the carb is CLEAN. I presynced the carbs. vacuum synched. tried to tune by ear (couldnt hear the sweet spot) put it back to spec. The bike ran fine. it sat for a few days. Took it for a ride and it was sounding / running like fuel starvation so i went to get gas and it didn't get any better. got home and it had oil coming out at the header ( header wasn't socked down) and out the tail pipe. there is MMO in the oil.

I'm going to put new plugs in and synch / tune it again.

    any ideas? questions?

I'm thinking you might have two carburetors flooding.

so you're saying that's gas mixed with oil and carbon coming out of the exhaust? :: smacks palm against forehead::

that'd be why it was running poorly too eh?

          carbs

If you have the brass floats did you check them for leaks before installation? Did you leak test the carbs before you put them on, and last but not least, did you adjust the drop tangs on the floats and trim back the bowl gaskets?

I had a hell of a time with my carbs. I had a bad leak, gas coming out of all four emulsion tubes. So before I figured out that the fuel and vent tees were in the opposite places I did everything possible to make sure the carbs were cleaned with everything in spec and all the levels at the right spot.

So I'm thinking I didn't get all the sand out of the gas tank after having it sand blasted and painted. And some of the sand is clogging her up.

Fuel filters would have prevented that.
