  • oil filter reassembly

So i changed the oil today on my 80 sg(First time for me). After removing the kerkers i got the filter housing off pretty easy. The drain plug was pretty tight and the head was a little worn but i came out as well. When i got the filter cup off the old filter had the spring sandwich in between the rubber gromets on the filter. In other words the spring was in the filter then there was another rubber gasket on top of the one in the filter that meets the oil cooler plate. I have did some searching on here and correct me if im wrong but it is supposed to have the spring under the filter to press it against the engine. Also there is supposed to be a washer instead of the extra rubber gasket that meets the engine. If some would could shed some light on this before i stub my toe it would be appreciated.
    Thanks jeff

OH and my real question is that with the filter this way was it filtering the oil?

Let me just explain the reassembly:

New O-ring around the bolt, put the bolt into the "cup", drop the sping around the end of the bolt, place the washer down the end of the bolt and onto the spring, put the filter in next, big O-ring onto the perimeter groove of the cup, and then reinstall the cup onto the crankcase. I think it helps to push the cup onto the crankcase with your hand while hand-tightening the bolt so that the big O-ring does not pop out of the groove (grease helps keep it in place after soaking the O-Ring in hot water). You will need the wrench ready to finish the tightening of the bolt as the O-ring around the bolt makes contact with the cup. Do not overtighten the bolt!

      Thanks

Thats what i thought i just dont have a washer to go over the spring. I guess it could have been done right when it was put in they just didnt use a metal washer and the spring found its way through the rubber gromet into the filter.

Still wondering if it would still filter the oil this way?

Any washer that fits around that bolt will work, go find one at a hardware store. It just acts as something solid for the spring to sit on. As long as the filter still covered the holes in the center bolt it should have still been filtering.

It does need to be a thick washer, well, wide like a fender washer. Wide enough to cover the spring with some room for the spring to be off center.

Last one I bought from Yamaha was $2.35 so a hardware store is cheaper but I like to get the correct one for that low a price. YMMV
