  • Oil Leak?

My bike is an 1979 XS1100 special with a oil leak. Its hard for me to describe where the leak is so I will include some pictures of where it is. I was wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and what the fix was.

This isnt my bike its just a picture off the internet so i can show where the leak is

You mean there is oil coming out of the airbox? Presumablyfrom the drain hole in the middle of the bottom section?

How much oil is coming out? What colour is it?

It looks to me like your are pointing to the bottom of the air box. It could be from a simple bit of oil coming from the breather because of an overfill or perhaps it's a combination of gas from the carbs combined with a little oil. Does it look like its coming from the bottom of the box? Is the breather connected properly at both ends? Hard to say without a picture of the actual situation.
Can't beat the smell of gas & oil

What you're pointing at means you have a fuel leak and not an oil leak. Your carburetors are flooding. Please verify.

+1 on what Marty said. DON'T RIDE THE BIKE until you know what's up, as this usually results in fuel getting into the oil too. Oil with gas in it doesn't lubricate too well, and you can ruin the bearings (and the motor) if that's the case. Change the oil after you figure this out to be safe...

It smells of gasoline, correct? You have a fouled airbox and the gasoline leaking into it is dissolving the mess. The fuel leak must be addressed first.

              Does it smell of gasoline?

Have you checked your oil level? I see you're new, you do know that the bike has to be on the centerstand or level to get an accurate reading? If you checked and added oil while the bike was on the sideside, it will be overfilled badly and that could be your problem...

Its in a shop right now to get a new tire and fork seals replaced. I will smell the leak and check the level on the center stand and post here again tomorrow.

Make sure the shop doesn't start the engine!

Jesse, if you come on here, and ask for ideas, and get answers, it is polite to tell us how you fixed it.

I am a little embarrassed by this (this is my first bike) i left the fuelcocks on and that caused fuel to leak out of airbox and mix with oil that was leaking from broken seals. The seals have been replaced and there is no more leaks.

                            rebuild the petcocks

They are not supposed to leak regardless if Standard or Special.

I'd change the oil too. Fuel might be diluting your oil.
