  • Cleaning Clutch Plates?

I'm getting into my 1st gear fix, and thought I'd try to eliminate my clutch slip since I've got it out anyways. Has anyone ever tried cleaning their friction discs in anything? On another bike, I used brake cleaner without any problems, but I'm thinking I'd like to let them soak for a while to make sure I get out whatever's causing the slip. I've got an ultrasonic cleaner I can use as well, and the steels are in it right now. My concern is that I may dissolve the friction pads.

I've also ordered some Barnett springs... I hear they may solve my problem on their own. I just figure I've got the clutch out anyways, so I may as well make sure I get it good and clean. Any stories of success or failure would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,

I wouldn't worry too much about cleaning them, just deglaze them and the steels with some light sandpaper or emory cloth and soak them in proper oil. Something like Castrol 4T 20w50 that is specific for wet clutches. The springs will most likely take care of the slip.

And, always use a proper oil like the one mentioned.

Since you got them all out, check their thickness on the friction disc, and check the steels for flatness. I forget the tolerances.

To check the steel plates, I took each one and held it against the glass in my garage door and used the proper size feeler to see if it woudl slip in anywhere around it. Easy enough to clean the window when your done.
