Ever heard that? I responded to a CL ad for a running 81 Special and a 2nd Special parts bike, nearly complete. Asking price was 1200. The runner was gray in the Pix and I though hum, don't remember them in gray, hum. I asked the mileage and he wasn't sure
Arrived to look and YIKES. Absolutely every part on the poor old bike was beat to death. The seat cover had seperated from the foam, the rear turn-signals were broke off, the owner had screwed metal pieces to the rear fender and attached reflectors near where the turn-signals were supposed to be. The bike had been rattle canned and the seat had rubbed through multiple layers and colors. The right mirror was broke off. The left front caliper was missing, both tires bald. The speedo showed 69,000 and the owner stated it wasn't that bad as he had swapped the speedo cause it went higher. It had the original exhaust which were rust out on the ends. The left plastic cover was missing the lettering and the right one had a corner broke off. Every parting line on the motor had a different color Silicon rubber squeezed out. The owner commented that he had finally got around to putting a clutch in, something that it had needed for years.
I asked to see the parts bike hoping that it was complete as all parts were probably needed and he responded that it was up the road in a barn, but wasn't assembled right now. It reportedly was just missing the gas tank and exhaust but other than that was complete. In the tractor arena we always laugh when the ad states "ran when parked". I submit that they all ran till parked. : )
I didn't go look at the parts bike and I didn't ask to start the "runner". I believe that this is the worst running bike I've personally seen. I'm not sure I would have taken it had he given it to me. May it RIP. Suddenly I feel a lot better about the XJ I bought in February.
