Hey Boys: Got a problem the above is happening & I don't get it. Any ideas? F.Y.I. Was working fine when put away last year. Put around 300 km it it then this happend. Went through the wiring last year -& new used TCI, Dyna coils & wires, TC fuse box & all cool there, new battery this spring (interstate) checked & charging at 14+ when over 2000 rpms, new used stator from the TinMan905 installed a year ago. New used regualator a couple yrs ago. All is fine, starts & idles etc no sweat. Then this is now going on. Could it be a a wire somewhere grounding out. I'm lost man. Your ideas would be awesome. Also, I know this isn't promoted but all conections have been wired direct where i could so to get rid of corroded plug in probs. SO all should be good there. Oh, & last year TINMAN905 checked the pick-up coil wires & all was fine there - Thx - Dan

Maybe...
...plugged fuel tank vent ? Spark plug heat range incorrect ? Solder connections in TCI ? Right handlebar switch grounding out ?
Has the main fuse been checked or replaced with a new 30 amp ?1980 XS1100G "Dolly G" Full Dresser (with a coat of many colors )

Thx Schming: I did put in new plugs this spring, same exact plugs as before (I'll change them back out with the ones from last year- worth a try) All handlebars switches new from Mikes 3 yrs ago. But still an idea, I'll check the tank vent - but it is backfiring when it goes out if I leave clutch on so fuel is still going in there, lines not empty. I'll replace the 30 amp fuse (worth a try) but the one in there is 3 yrs old & blade type with TC fuse box but I'll check that whole main line. Thx for the ideas. Anymore out there?'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.

Thx WSL91 - That might be the momma man!! Fuel starvation at high RPM's. You know i ran up the gears 6-7000 rpms to 100 kms at around 4000 rpms. then less than 2 mins shut down. The second time was reved back up to 5th then passed a dude at over 120 kms /hr then shortly after another shut down. Another time, the day b4 was in first gear going down in hill in suburbs with high revs then shut down. Y'know i only put 5000 kms on it last year (usaully 10,000kms) so i have not yet changed out my 2 in line gas filters (got new ones this winter) so there you go maybe a simple deal like that - the filters have been sitting all winter with fuel stabil in them but maybe dirty & or glazed over a bit from sitting all winter. I usually change them out rifht away every spring. I thinks thats the ticket. Cause after the 2nd shut down I keep her at around 80kms - less rpms & made it all the way home & tired even on gearing down to keep the rpms down. thx a million man!! I will change out the filters (they are good ones with the bronze in them & bell shaped from the Yama dealer - same as one s on there now. Man this place rocks!!! I really think thats the deal! Crap weather raining right now) & in a hockey tournament all wknd (this is Canada eh?) But will check it out when I can. Man alive probably simple dirty gas filter - Dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.

It may not even be the filters, first before doing any work, put the petcocks on PRIME and see if it still happens. IF so...then do the filters, if NOT, then it's not the filters, but whatever you are using to control fuel flow. You have an MNS, so it has the Octy, the control valve can get stuck, the vacuum hose for it cracked so it's not opening fully to permit high enough fuel flow for the hi rpm runs!? Prime bypasses the Octy valve function. Hope it is something simple!

Sounds like pickup coil wires--I had that exact same problem on mine, until at last it would not start at all. Really easy to check again, and a common XS problem.
I know you checked them last year, but it was also running fine last year...Healthy is merely the slowest rate at which you can die
Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. Problem solved
Hey TC: The 1st thing I took off the bike when I got it was the octy, thx for the idea though. I changed the fuel filters & the lines too on sat. & ran it at 6 to 6500 rpms for over 20 mins straight with no probs. What a monster!! Kept her in 3rd only, no problems at all. So thats what is was, I guess the filters must of got a little glaze over them from the winter storage & couldn't keep up with the high flow. I will kept in mind Ford's mention of the pick up wires if anything else comes up. So maint, maint, maint gotta keep on top of it with these ole bikes. Will clean flush out my front & back brakes lines this wk. Its been a couple years since done. THx again for all your help - all is cool on the island again. Man alive I had a nightmare of seeing myself on a used CBR125 if I had no other options to get rolling again hehe. Adios - Dan'81 XS1100 LH - Midnight Special - been lookin' a long time for this one.
