    backfiring

I agree with ratbyk, I don't believe that the exhaust can cause this problem especially at little or no load. Jerry mentioned pre-ignition, this normally only occurs at very high load and temperatures.

      Now,there ya go!

That is where my thinking is at.I have heard about a lean condition without the airbox, or aftermarket individual filters(the little thingies that hang on each carb) and needing to rejet for those.I just needed a little assurance that there might be a fun bike under this pile"O" money.Seem's like everytime I go to the garage,I find something else I need to purchase, or rebuild.I now think his(my) clutch slipping was(is) due to a very tight clutch cable.I cant pull it with my bare hand.It will be replaced, soon, and both freeplay adjustment's made. The SS brake hoses set me back a bunch, but ya gotta have binders. The original hoses were so soft that I thought I couldnt get a good bleed!I will keep on plugging(and spending) untill it is rideable, or I am broke.

well the bike shop went ahead and did a COMPRESSION TEST
before I could call them off ,they all looked pretty good so the burnt valve theory is out the window , I'm bringing her home tommorrow and am going to address the leaky exhaust first and then I am going to coat the rubber manifolds and if that doesn't take care of it then I guess I will have to look at the coil , plug wires and if that doesn't take care of it I'm going to take it back to the bike shop and get them to redo the carbs for free . I want to thank all of you for the great advice you have provided me it has been extremely helpful.....thanks....mark

          PRIZE AT THE END

Keep plugging Poolboy. I got the Ratbyk 3 years ago and it ran and looked like; S__T . Love it now. Smooth, goes like a train and looks good. (I think)
It took me a year and a half to break down and spring for stainless brake lines. After experiencing the difference although expensive are well worth the investment. Next up, if you do not have a fork brace get after Tkat right now. He has some more ready for delivery. Who knows, this may be the last chance. We are all getting older. Kind of like our bikes. We both need TLC.
