  • What Battery do we use?

I've been racking my brain on trying to figure out what type/size/ model number battery that's supposed to fit in our bikes.
It's been over 5 years since I bought one for my G, so I can't remember.
    I'm looking for something inexpensive.
I've searched the forum and there's a lot on the AGM/Sealed batteries.
I'm not interested in them. Call me old school, I like the wet cells.
It's my commuter, so my bike never sits more than 3 days without riding. (maybe 2 weeks in the winter if there's snow.)
I can't remember if I got my last one from walmart or advanced auto.

I'm just looking for part numbers or some other code of battery lingo that'll point me in the right direction to get the right size.
    Like 18LA or 24GL ... etc.

    Thanks.
ps. I understand that some of you love your AGMs, but that's not the direction I want to go.

Thanks Phil, That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for.

Anyone else have any ideas about other brands/stores ?

        Hi George,
all Clymer's sez is 12V 20AH; helpful, right?
What you need to know is the physical size and where the terminals and the vent are located.
Most likely even if Clymer's did include the battery alphanumeric code it wouldn't be too much help; the code differs between battery mfrs and they all seem to change the codes every few years anyway.
Best you measure the old battery and go see a proper battery shop.

GLowe, personnel preference and initial cost might be a factor for some, but in this case, ya' get what cha' pay for. My preference is Interstate, but at the $90 price, may not fit others pocketbook. It is now headed towards its 8th yr. and 'killed' just twice. The Exide in my Honda ST was in it when I bought the bike........8yrs.ago....and still is. Key is good clean connections at all times, initially buy a quality battery which has more internal plating, and don't own a battery-tender, as they REDUCE the longgivity of any wet-cell battery as does 'shelving' one during the 'off' season.

And don't go for any of the Li-Ion batteries that are occasionally mentioned. They get hot during charging and can catch fire and I don't even know if the XS charging system works properly with them. I've seen them mentioned as the lastest must-have battery but, like you, I prefer to stick to lead-acid. It's tried and trusted.

I just took the rubber "mat" that sits under the battery in the tray, along with a height measurement, to NAPA and they went in the back and found the biggest capacity battery that physically fit. I think it cost around $50.

The XS charging system doesn't work right to use one of those; I forget the details, but TFord researched using one in his XS and ended up trying one in another bike and was happy with it, even after it caught his bike on fire....

                    Thanks for the info guys.

                    Looks like walmart for me.

Maybe I'll just cheat and use the battery out of my G.
It's not that hard to swap batteries from bike to bike.

I just replaced my old one with a new XPower AGM for $119 at Batteries Plus. Just tell them the year/model of your bike and they'll cross-reference it. The new one is a perfect fit, comes with a 2 year warranty and provides 330 cca.
