  • Leaking CCT A-Freaking gain

I did a re-do on the stock CCT about a week ago while I was sprucing up some other items. I put a new "paper" gasket on between the CCT and the cylinder block and used some gasket compound that is normally pretty good stuff. I even used some blue thread locker on the threads of the two screws that hold it down. I rode yesterday about 100 miles and no signs of leaking. Today I put on another 75 or so and what do I see, oil leaking between the CCT and cylinder where it appears the two screws loosened up just a bit because I was able to move both just a bit when I checked them for tightness. I have a factory gasket still left in my pile of stuff so I'm going to go after it once more. It's definitely NOT leaking at the hold-down bolt or at the end that points towards the front of the bike. I was wondering if the cylinder gets hot enough to squash the gasket down a bit and then when it cools, a minute gap is left? In any event, I don't have a bitch with the way the CCT is functioing, just the friggin oil. Has anyone used anything on the threads of the bolts or gasket sealer in the gasket thatseems to work?

There is a little Oring that goes on the original where the lock down bolt and lock nut hold the adjuster in place. When they get old they leak and sometimes even break thay can leak quite a bit of oil. You can use one from an automotive store if it has problems. I don't think you can use form a gasket to make this stop leaking it needs an Oring. Those bolts need to be tightened pretty snug so the gasket mashes down and it should not able to be moved by hand. If you have a torque wrench the torque is 7.5 LB for the allen screws
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Do NOT use a silicone gasket sealer on the paper gasket. That WILL lead to a leak. I use the Yamabond #4 on most things, and do not have any problems. Any non-hardening sealer SHOULD work, but I trust the Yamabond.
As ViperRon said, do use a torque wrench on the hold down bolts. If you do not plan on pulling it for a while, ONE DROP of the red thread lock will keep them from backing out. As the barrels and CCT are both aluminum, the expansion rate is the same.

That'll work, if you REALLY don't plan on removing. Lonerider, your better choice would be to use that new 'saved' gasket and install an auto-tensioner. With age and mileage, the stock tensioner does NOT stay tensioned upon a hard decel and can ruin your day and the top-end of your bike......quicker than a blink....

For lack of a different material, I just quickly cut a cork gasket for mine because I have it on hand. I imagine cork can't handle the temps of normal operation. I guess when it starts leaking I'll swap it with something better

WE'll see how it goes today. Our weather in Northern Michigan has been outstanding, 80 degrees yesterday. I got a new "O" ring, metal washer, and gasket from Bikebandit a while back and I installed them all last night with some new gasket material. Hopefully this time will be better. The bike is running like a champ so this leaking thing is just an annoyance. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a 32 year old bike but over the years I've developed a disdain for leaking on anything motorized.

Aww, really? I have resigned myself to thinking of my bike like an Army Aircraft, if it is leaking, at least I know it isn't empty...

I put a auto CCT off a Yamaha Raptor on The King of Kong. Made a gasket out of some rubber gasket material with a fiber reinforcement layer in the middle. Put (please forgive me) Honda High Heat Sealer on both sides of the gasket. It's sposed to be like Yamabond 4. No leaks yet, but all I've done is started it a few times in the barn. That was enough to make it leak before.
