  • 79 XS11 Special value?

i recently inherited a 79 XS11 Special from my father and i am trying to determine its value? It is all original with 10k miles and has the fairing and hard saddle bags.

It has not been running in the last 3-4 yrs, but has been stored indoors all its life.

Any idea what it's worth? i am considering getting it up and running this summer but could be talked into parting with it if the price is right.

    Thanks
    Chris

    Value

Values vary widely from country to country and from state to state. You need to post some pictures for better opinions and estimates but $$ could be anywhere from $1000 to $5000 depending on condition and location.

There are "blue book" values listed for them. As Mack stated, condition and operational is critical to value. Setting that long, if the gas was not drained from the carbs or if the tank sat empty unoiled that long, you have alot of work to get it back on the road. Brake systems will need to be cleaned, carbs cleaned, tank cleaned. Time of year changes value on a MC, they are seem to be worth twice as much in spring as they are in the late fall.

At the end of the day though, it all comes down to luck. Who has the money and is looking for what you have, Find the right buyer you get twice as much out of it. but that right buyer might only come along once in three years. With bikes this old you have to find someone who sees a cool old bike, and not a old piece of junk that needs alot of work and will always need alot of work.

Thanks for the responses guys. I'm gonna get it cleaned up and go through the tank and carbs to see how far it is from running. The site has been very helpful in lining up how to go about those projects. I'll post some pics once we get going.

Don't listen to slow mo! He kicks kittens for fun!

You should get it running, and ride it all the time. Just not without the hardbags. Definitely get rid of those. In fact, I would be happy to take them off your hands for you!

I hope it isn't much trouble to get running and you get years of enjoyment out of the bike!

With all the comments I see you are getting here you better keep storing it indoors till you find out what its worth or you might be just selling a frame.

Actually its not that complicated to get an original bike back into working order. When you have a bike that has passed thew several hands and has sit for some time you have no idea how much trouble you have. If you read all the information here before you start and ask questions on things you do not understand people here will get you the right answers. Value is based a lot on how original the bike is. Important things are original paint and the coveted original exhaust which I can verify for you if you send them to me.

I disagree . You will get the most money from an uninformed person that wants a cheap ride with no idea of what it takes to restore and enjoy and suffer thru the restore. And most likely give up. Most money , most disappointment . But you will find the most money there.
