  • Problem?? 81 LH

Not sure if I've crossed something when I redid my harness, but with just the key on I have tail and signals etc. Is this normal for an 81 LH. My SF has nothing until the motor starts.

Mack, you should have tail and running lights, but no signals. The headlight/instrument lights come on via the headlight relay when the bike starts....

Correction; taillight only, the LH doesn't have running lights. So if any of the turns are lighting up, something is plugged into the wrong place....

        Left control

I'll have to try it again tomorrow. I had the control all apart and cleaned it up today. It also had two wire broken off the black circuit board. After much difficulty (fingers are too big for this type off work) I finally managed to solder them back on. One off the head light, the other off the signal. May explain some things. I'll install tomorrow and see if I got it right.

          Mack,

Whatever is wrong with yours is also wrong with my SH, turn signals work with key on only, engine not running. I think it is in the wiring.

            Sorry

to hear that Don, I tracked mine issue down to be in the left handlebar control. Try removing yours and see if the bike will run, or at least you'll have ruled out one problem source.

Mack, I intended to say your situation is normal for an 81 anyway. My bike runs and rides fine. However, it matches yours in that the turn signals will work perfectly with the key in the ON position, and the engine not running.

My G the tail and turn signals work with the ignition on and the engine not running. In my case the running lights are on too, but that's because it's a standard. AFAIK this is normal, and matches my knowledge of the wiring diagrams, while the stock flasher will not flash sometimes without the engine running, this is not always true, and aftermarket electronic flashers will pretty much always work under those conditions.
