  • XSChop's chain drive conversion

I just talked to him a little bit ago, and Robert (XSChop) said he won't be doing any more of the chain drive conversions for our bikes. He said that even if he charged $650, with the time and materials he had into them, they just weren't worth doing any more.

So... just letting you all know that what's out there is all there will be unless you find another manufacturer.

I would like to carry forward with trying to get more of these units built. I have a CNC resource who will likely do the first one at material cost for me. Once the machine is setup he would make batches and probably ask for some compensation but not sure, he is a very generous guy and I have a good relationship with him.

The assembly and shipping would be up to me... Im open to the idea of just offering the housing and letting people source the bearings and assemble the unit. That would free me up and lower cost for shipping... any thoughts?

Rather than reinvent the wheel (or steal it), I would like to ask Chop if he is willing to release the details of the housing to me so I can start with creating code for VMC. Tod, can you contact him for me and ask him if he is open to this idea? Thanks!

You also will need to sacriface a middel drive to get a necessary part out of it. It is not real easy to remove it. I had a spare and got the part for him. I don't even know what it is called, so you will need that detail as well.

This may be a dumb question but why would you want to convert to chain? Just for the hell of it or is there an advantage?

Those two right-angle turns in the drive consume power; it may be as much as 10% of the HP available at the crankshaft. A chain drive only uses about 2-3%, so the 'free' power is the main goal. It also eliminates the 'pogoing' effect of the pinion gear trying the climb the ring gear, so handling is improved somewhat. One downside to the swap is you're limited to a small front sprocket (I think you can fit up to a 15T if you use 520 chain), so chain life is poor.

Although the conversion usually ends up costing about $140 per HP, what with the gearbox mods, new swingarm/wheel, etc...

I wonder what it is..? I would rather not do the assembly of the unit, it would be easiest for me if everyone would do their own assembly given the proper instructions here... IDK what kind of tools it would entail either...

I just talked to Chop last night and he said there wasn't any program. He has an old Herco CNC machine and everything was hand entered as he did it. I was thinking you were asking for a program, but maybe he has all the details written down. I'm supposed to go see him sometime next week to get all his XS11 stuff, so I'll ask him about it then. He's getting away from the bikes. He's starting to make a decent side income fabbing up the necessary parts to drop Corvette motors into old Porsches. I think he said he still had one more chain drive unit if anyone was interested..

Im not asking for the program as my guy will have to write his own for his machine, I need machine drawings so I know what to make. I dont know if he has them drawn/sketched out or if he would be willing to lend me one to measure up... It would be easier if I had his contact info, you mind asking him if I have it?

He said he's got one more set of those, and I've already got dibs on them... sorry. I'll see if he feels like making any more though. I like that they are double lipped and won't pop out.

Marshy, I'll tell him he needs to get on here and chat with you.
