  • Stuck Pilot Jets

I know this must have been answered before, but i'll be darned if i can find it. Rebuilding my carbs (80SG) and two of my pilot jets are stripped in the hole. I cant screwdrive em out obviously, and i'm not real keen on drilling em out as i dont wanna kill the threads in the hole. Any suggestions on removal? Im fine with destroying the ones in there as i have new ones. Also, the slide needles that came with my rebuild kits (from georgefix) appear to be from the 78-79 models as they have 5 notches at the top for adjustment. My stock ones do not. Will the new ones be a problem or should i stick with the originals? Id like to use the new ones since they make for easier adjustment if need be. Thanks for the advice guys.

    What I did

Is to make a wood jig for the carbs to sit in and keep them plumb and level. I put a small metel bit in a drill press and slide the jig under the bit till it was centered over the pilot screw. Center is key here. Slowly work the bit into the top of the screw little bit at a time making sure the bit stays in the center. Once you have a very small hole started 1/8 inch or so, switch to a larger bit, and repeat until you can tap the smallest square robertson screw drive into and seat in the hole. Push down hard and turn. If you've been applying anti sieze in liberal amounts prior, they should crack open for you. It's worked for me several time now. I've never found an easy out that works for this job.

We just had this discussion a couple weeks ago concerning the needle jets and jet needles. The concensus was that the needles need to match the emulsion tubes for best performance and tuning. If you got them from george fix, send him and email with the numbers on your tubes. Should be 300 x2 and tell him you need the 5 GL 16 needles. Not the 18's. He's pretty good for this sort of thing.

I've done the same, drilled a hole in the jet and hammer in an allen key. It should form it's own hex in the soft brass jet. Apply PB Blaster first and let it soak before tapping in the allen or square bit. Left hand drill bit is another option.

Aaron, if you have any slot left at all, try the drill press trick first. It works like a champ.
