I wouldn't even look for another engine. I mean, I'd run the bike as it is. Unless you hear more noise than usual, I wouldn't even worry about it. They are tough engines and, ifyou didn't actually know about the cam scratches, I bet there's nothing about the performance that would highlight it...... right? I bet there are engines out there in daily use with much worse goings on inside them..

My thoughts also, James. If you look at the outsides of where the cams are spinning in the journals, you can see where they are smooth. Looks like the damage was done a while ago, and now they are straightening themselves out and running true now.
I absolutely disagree with you though about your engine statement. I think everyone needs a FEW extra engines.. just in case.Try your hardest to be the kind of person your dog thinks you are.
You can live to be 100, as long as you give up everything that would make you want to live to be 100!

+1 on the extra engine. Got one sitting there "just in case" Of course one of these days I might get a bike that is fine except for a basket case engine and end up putting said engine in it, but for now, I have a spare sitting a waiting just in case.Cy

Marty; the good news polish the bearing surfaces of the cam and head, clean it well and you' ll run well for a very very long time.
more good news is that your crankshaft and rods won't have this type of damage.
Bad news I see this type of damage all the time on motors that have sat for years with old dirty oil in them. what happens is that over time the contaminates in the old oil will set up a electrolysis process where the aluminum is in direct contact with steel, so aluminum oxide forms and transfers to the steel, and when the motor is started it scores both sides. this does not happen with the crank because the steel and aluminum are not in direct contact. it does happen where the piston contacts the cylinder wall but most folks put fresh oil down each hole before starting and the oxide is washed away pretty quickly.Alias Larry R in Kelso WA
