  • dash bulb question

I've been trying to do some research and figure out what type of bulbs go in the tach / speedo / turn signals, are the bayonet or push in type? The parts list shows they're all the same, I pulled one out of a spare and it was a push in type.
Just trying to figure this out so I can go buy some before pulling everything apart. A real pita with the fairing on and all.

123-83516-21-00 BULB (12V3.4W) I'm pretty sure they're all the same, both in your SG and G.

Be careful, because I had different bulbs in my LH before I swapped the gauge cluster. They were the Wedge style, like this:

It seems that MOST of the models did use the BA9's like in Jet's picture though.

So, is it a year thing that at some point in production they swapped types, or is it just some wierd issue.
I guess I'll get both types and then I'll know what type I have when I open it up.

You might as well just open it up and look. There are only 2 nuts holding each side in, and the bulbs are easy to get to.

Is this the G or the SG? IIRC my G has the push and twist type, but I'm not 100% sure, but I do need to check again cause I've got one out, and I may as well get LED bulbs and put in there so I don't EVER have to change them again.

If the parts fiche is to be believed, all the XS models except for the H and LH use the bayonet base lamps. The H and LH, as well as the XJ use the wedge base. Kind of a weird split (why didn't the SH use them too?), but that's according to mother Yamaha....

It's my G that has a blown left signal light. The problem is that with the fairing on it's impossible to pull the cover off. Maybe tomorrow I'll pull the cover on my SG and see what's in there.

FWIW, my XS1100SG and my XS650SK use the bayonet lamps. At least, that's how I remember it. I have a XS650SH and I don't remember anything different in there.

Thanks Steve. I think I've figured this out. My SG has bayonet style and I'm gonna assume that my G does too. The thing is I got a replacement gauge cluster from TC that I guess came from an H because it has the push in type. So my G's gauges are now push in type while my instruments are bayonets.
Now can I put in LEDs without messing with the auto cancel?

LED's in the turn indicators can be enough to make the OEM flasher not work, which of course would make the auto cancel not work, as it works only with the OEM flasher. The auto cancel unit doesn't care one little bit about what type of bulbs you have, as it doesn't see any actual current to speak of itself, it just sends a signal to the flasher to tell it to turn itself off. The OEM flasher is what cares, it will NOT work with anything very much below the stock bulb load. The auto cancel unit will still send out it's signals, but since the OEM flasher will not flash, it won't cancel since it's cancel function works by preventing it from coming back on after it goes into the off part of it's flashing cycle. And of course if you replace it with a two prong flasher it won't auto cancel unless you do the mod, which I'm trying to get my neurons together enough to fix up so the mod can get posted into the tech tips area.

It is possible to modify the OEM flasher to operate at a lower load/voltage. I've taken them apart and narrowed the gap of the breaker points. They will always flash even with a weak battery. YMMV.

They are not a bimetallic type unit like automotive units, but use a pair of coils, to alternately open and close the points. However, if this DOES work, you will have changed the speed at which the flasher flashes, and this is something to be careful of, as having read more than one states laws regarding flashers (before working on the mod I wanted to make sure that at least in my state and those around me it was not something that would be likely to get me in trouble) they actually state a minimum and maximum rate at which the turn signals MUST flash. If you have moved them outside of this range, you COULD end up with an expensive ticket, or even fail the safety inspection, in some states depending on the mood the officer is in, and how he feels about bikers, they can even impound the bike (I know, not likely, but FAR more likely with a bike than with a car, as some officers have a real problem with bikes anyways).

Yes, it does flash a tad faster but not super fast like some of those crotch rockets do. There is also a second adjustment inside that can be done, the distance for the magnetic field (if that's what it's called) . Just some more of my "voodoo electronics" mods, lol.

i replaced 1 tac bulb on my SH, and it was the bayonet push in type, silver, just like Marty's pic, and i was lucky enough to find 1 in my box of bulbs ive collected for 30yrs. i knew there was a reason to keep them.
