Yes, I reckon Raffaele is probably one of those baby boomers from the UK. I'll have to tell him to say "Jeez, us Brits", next time

The Special frames and Standard frames are not the same where the ali footrest brackets fit on the frames, they are not interchangeable.

They differ at the threaded hole behind the swing arm pivot, on the Standard 2H9 frame the threaded hole has a lower than the swing arm pivot centreline, and nearly on the same level on the Special frames.

The Special exhausts are swept up requiring the different ali brackets to the Standards with the more horizontal silencers, if the Venturer has the Special type exhausts it'll have the matching ali brackets and therefore frame.

The other difference is the standards have the rear brake lever pivot built into the footpeg/exhaust hanger, on the Specials/US-spec '81H that pivot is part of the frame...

The price guide I have says a 78 xs1100 standard and a 79 xs1100 special in perfect condition are both $5000 bikes. That would be a show piece original or perfect restore, unriden #1 class. #2 $4,000 superior restore or extremely well maintained oriinal< #3 $3,000 very good, #4 $2,500 good, #5 $1,500 restoreable, #6 $1,000 parts bike,
Krause publications. I've read the same thing other places, and sold them just about as well, on the higher end, before the economy went south. I don't think you could ever hope for a $1000 parts bike. These bikes are worth more than the $ it costs to buy them. Just about the only thing these days.

Guessing that somewhat may be attributied to the fact of being the worlds quickest production motorcycle fall 77 SEMA show.........yup, dealer I bought mine new from was there and Yammy having just the filming on stage and no bike present at the time of Pee-Wee Gleason twising the 1/4mile was enough to have the whole banquet room going nuts......very interesting story of details from one who was present..........and obviously was convincing enough for me, specially after riding one back then....

the guy i bought mine from wanted 2000, i talked him down to 1500, before looking at it, then i saw it, it had a crappy rattle can paint job, but he said the brakes had been rebuilt, and he rebuilt the carbs, so i talked him down to 1300....now ive gone in rebuilt the forks, brakes, MC's, and now rehashing the the carbs and fixing a ton of his mistakes....i love the xs, but i fear i paid too much....

I paid $100 for the field bomb and $300 for the midnight, but what I'd pay and what they are worth are not the same....

It's tough to put a price on this model cause I love it, but I was shocked to see that a 1978 xs11 standard carries just over 1,000$ as a kelly blue book price tag... Is that accurate?

                    Andrew

If so, I got taken to the cleaners for mine, but it's only got 6k miles on it
I just went through that buying mine. KBB and NADA are way apart on these models. NADA has them around 2200-2400. Makes it hard to know what to go by. I decided based on that and adds and negotiating with a couple sellers that a very nice 1980 is going to run you around 2k. There was one in Des Moines that was very nice that I passed on as he came down to 2100 and it had the 2nd gear problem and a big scratch in the paint.

I have about $3K in my $1000 fixer-upper... Let me just say that buyers remorse quickly disappears when you touch the starter and feel that rumble between your legs and that smooth power roll on... These machines are an incredible value - quit counting beans and enjoy it!
