  • oil leak. please help

I have a oil leak and don't know what part this is. Any help is appreciated. It is a 82 1100.
It is in between the exhaust on the motor . Maybe a pump? It has a black plug in it.

That is the Cam Chain Adjuster. The plugs on those are notorious for leaking. You could clean it off and put some RTV around that black seal.

It could also be leaking from the o-ring in the lock screw, or even the seal at the block. The o-ring is not to hateful to replace. Replacing the engine gasket requires removing the CCT, be sure to read up on the post here for the process to remove it. It is not a tough job, but the order and steps are VERY important.

I'd do the CCT switch, as per threads here. No leaks ever again, Maintenance-free. More solid kit. Anti-slip back ratchet. A great modification
