  • Stock XS1100 Oil Cooler with Kerker 4-1?

    Hi
I currently have a Kerker 4-1 Manifold on my 79 Special and just sourced an XS1100 specific Lockhart Oil Cooler (the Sandwich Plate type). My question is, does anyone have experience trying to lower the oil pan approx. 1" to squeeze the Cooler adapter in? It looks like a tight fit where the upper runners meet the collector.

Any help would be great. Thanks In advance!

hey, I had been looking for a while and found one on Ebay that came of an XS11 that was complete, in great shape and included all the nesecary pieces. I think it set me back a good hundred bucksk, But ill do anything to cool this bike down come August. Im going to look into it when I do my oild change, I may just dent in the top of my collector just enough if i have to

        Mark,
It won't fit, there's barely enough room to get the filter bowl out. I bought a SOFA (spin on filter adapter), with oil cooler fittings and haven't been able to install it because there's no room.
I thought about changing my Kerker 4 X 1 for a SS Jardine 4 X 2 that I have but I like the sound and performance of the Kerker too much.

I've ridden in 115 deg summer weather and not had any problem with my bike overheating, nor any signs of oil breakdown. I do make sure my oil is of good quality and I change it on time, especially in the summer, and I don't let myself get caught in stop and go traffic, then again I don't see what good a cooler would do in stop and go traffic anyways since no air would be moving over it. If I were pulling a trailer or riding two up I would probably consider a cooler, but it's a bit harder to install one with the skettis than with most other pipes so it's not worth the work to me. Another option would be to replace the clutch frictions and switch to synthetic oil as it can take a good bit higher temps without problems than dino oil can.

You can run a cooler through the oil feed line to the head at the back of the cylinders too. You just have to figure where to run the lines.

I'm kinda with Cy on this though. I ran an oil cooler on mine when I got it because it came with the bike. I had to take it off when I put the fairing on last fall because it mounted on the same bolts the fairing mount does.

Haven't noticed a difference yet. It looked good on there though.

              Hey,

I am not worried really about over heating, Im looking to gain performance by lowering engine temps. It may be subtle but the bike is a Cafe Racer so ill take even small gains in power or rideability. I also like the look of the set up I have
I am familiar with the other stlye cooler set up but im just not a fan of the oil lines running all over the place. If I need to hammer or cut a slight relief in the upper part of the 4-1 collector and shave some of the fins on the stock filter housing, I might be able to pull it off.

Might as well show a pic of the bike

You are not going to get any performance gains from an oil cooler here, especially if you go notching (i.e. restricting) the exhaust to cram it in there.

This isn't like you are putting a cooler in a supercharger system.

if you really like the way it looks you could always mount it non-functional

i know you are trying to use it, but it seems like this might be a bigger pain than its worth

                          bulky

It just seems the 1100 looks more bulky than the cafe look you usually see. I'm guessing 650 & 750 size makes for a different look

You should be able to just fit the cooler WITHOUT bending the pipes. Just order a BUNCH of exhaust gaskets, as you WILL need to drop the pipes at every oil change. The Kerkers ARE worth the cost, though!
