I have been diagnosing and fixing little things here and there from the PO. I had a wring gremlin, found it, i believe I fixed it. Now IM trying to find out why the oil press light comes on and stays on. Well, I found the Light checker unit, unplugged it, and the light goes off. However the brake light stays on. I had an extra wire running into my ignition fuse. I found that that wire is runnign into a plug that is going to the tailights...I cant believe I never saw this before....could it be hard wired by passing the light checker?

To bypass the 'light checker', connect the blue/yellow and blue wires together to make the taillight work. All the other wires dead-end at the checker, so just make sure they can't short to anything and leave them.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

I think there are two things being asked here, first is the light checker (RLU), second is the extra wire form the fuse to the tail light.
The RLU can be eliminated with no detrimental effect to the operation of the bike. Its primary purpose in life is to "monitor" if your healdight is operating in its current hi/low beam setting, and if it fails, switch it to the other setting. Like Steve has stated, to eliminate it, you just need to connect the blue/yellow wire to the blue wire. I did this by cutting the wire connector off the actual RLU and then I removed all the wires from the connector but the blue and blue/yellow. I then soldered those two together with shrink wrap over them. Then replug the connector back into the harness.
As to your issue with the "extra" wire, what color is the wire in the tail light connector that it runs to?Life is what happens while your planning everything else!

The light checker unit (LCU) and the reserve lighting unit (RLU) are two different critters. The RLU is found on all XS11's but the LCU is found only on the 79 Special. Probably because it is the only model with a single tail light bulb.2H7 (79) owned since '89
