I'm the new proud owner of a 82xj 1100. I have a warning light when I start it that flashes I can reset it then after a few minutes of idling it flashes again. I was wonderind it could have something to do with oil pressure. The genius I got it from never turned the gas off and left in on when he trailered it to my house. And it looked as if he was using it as the worlds heaviest dirtbike judging by the mud packed into everything. Ok back to my point the oil smells like gas and its over full and blowing it out of the vent. I'm trying to locate a oil filter so I can change the oil. The bike is in really good shape except a tank dent and a ugly color. I'm also going to need some intake boots mine are all cracked and nasty looking. anybody have a good used set or know where I can get a set cheap. Best I can find are about 80 bucks a set. Thanks in advance for any replies.

If it is overfull and blowing out the vent and the oil smells like gas, do not run it untill you have checked out things further. The warning light may well be the battery level light which will do as you are saying. There is a fix on here for adding a diode to eliminate that issue. As I have yet to do that fix I can not attest to it's ease. Please do not assume it is for that particular reason the light is coming on though.
Do a check on the carbs to see if they are leaking, as that is mostly the cause of gas in oil. If you have spare oil you could drain it and drain the filter cup. Let the oil filter dry in the air for a while and refill the oil. Not necessarily the best option but one you can do while getting a filter. Filters are readily available from many sources.
As for the carb boots they have a couple of layers so while they look terrible outside they may not be cracked thru. 80 bucks is not bad for a set of 4 as I get mine from georgefix on Ebay and his are around a hundred bucks.
Just do not get to excited to run the bike and do something that may ruin your week. Take it easy and find what needs fixing before running it. The oil out the vent may be from worse issues but from what you describe it sounds like it will not be too bad.2-79 XS1100 SF

First off if you even think there is gas in the oil do not run it or try starting it for 2 reasons. One the gas kills the viscosity of the oil and it will destroy bearings and second compressed gas can explode. Drain and replace the oil and replace the filter. Get the bike level on the center stand lift the front wheel up and put a block under it so that if gas drains from the carbs it drains toward the filter not into the cylinders. There is a maintenance section where they talk about things to look for in a neglected bike you should read those areas that you see need attention many times leaky fuel petcocks are a problem along with carburator issues. You can do a search here in the forums and read the information on carbs and rebuilding there is a lot. One quick thing is to see if you can open the drain plugs to the carburator bowls and see what is in there. If you find trash old gas water or scale cleaning carburators is a definate. To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.

Warning lights
When the guy dropped it off he started it and ran it for about a minute. I have not ran it since. I runs perfect and idles great. Its a little cold blooded. But nothing thats not normal. The cracked boots look rough are thier any tricks to checking them without taking them off? My original question is about the warning light. You mentioned the battery level, and installing a diode. Does a low battery trigger the light? I should have the oil changed this weekend as well as the middle and final drive oils just to be safe. The engine sounds great very quiet no rattles or knocks. This is my 5th bike I have picked up in need of some help but my first yamaha. I have had 2 kawasaki kx's a kawasaki sr and a honda cb 750 and a suzuki gs 550. Im not a expert but a had some motorcycle wrench time. I'm just not familliar with yamaha other than their four wheelers. Does the warning light flashing mean there is something the needs attention. Or is only for critical systems. Will it flash to draw my attention to the dash for another indication. Like low fuel or something? The book doesn't really say anything about how it works.
