Auto Cam Chain Tensioner Cross Reference

Not many to choose from then. Could be a problem finding one.....

The thing I wanna find with the one off the raptor is what other atv/dirt bike motors you can get one from. You walk into the Yamaha dealer in this part of the country you'll find a 2 or 3 to 1 ratio of powersport stuff over street stuff.

As you can find a Raptor tensioner for 9 or 10 bucks online compaired to the 20 to 40 they want for a venture tensioner. I'd rather save 20 bucks if it all works out. JAT

Check one thing on that ACCT when you get it; see how the spring tension compares to the stock one. There's a considerable difference between the V-max/Venture spring and the Vision unit (with the V-max spring being much stiffer compared to OEM/Vision), good info to have to make a decision on...

I just ordered a couple Raptor tensioners off e-bay this morning from the same seller. The total came to about $20 shipped, but they say they'll refund part of the shipping for combined shipping. Awesome!

Well, yes and no.... You're correct, once the stock tensioner is set the spring doesn't have any effect. But it does determine how much tension is applied once you lock it in place.

And as you noted, the auto-tensioners apply continuous tension, it's just that the Venture/V-max units have much stiffer springs compared to the OEM springs (or the Vision units) so you're applying more tension to the chain. Whether that's bad or not, hard to say. I would think that could increase wear on the plastic chain guides over the long-term (wearing out unobtainium parts) so having this info is just another fact to allow a owner to make their choice of which unit to buy...

Well we will find out. My raptor tensioner should be here today or tomorrow. They won't fit in my valve spring checker so doing it the scientific way is a no go. But i'vw got other ways of testing.

Like I said... A little more pressure doesn't worry me. I'm willing to be the stock 33 year old one use to have a lot more pressure when it was a youngster. All springs start to fail once the are put under load.

So I popped into my store a bit ago and my raptor chain tensioner was waiting for me in the mail. Took it out of the box. Now I will say right now... I have not had my stock CCT out so i can't verify the spring pressure in it. But I can tell you after fondling the raptor one if your worried about excess spring pressure constantly on your chain guide you can rest your sphincter

If this thing can cause premature chain failure or stretching than that chain shouldn't be in there. I bet there isn't over 20 psi of pressure in this spring. All this thing does is keep enough pressure on the guide bar that as the chain stretches over time the plunger has just enough pressure on it it follow the bar in as the chain stretches and then lock itself @ the next ratchet tooth. just my opinion. Ymmv

Before becoming converted, I raised the point re the constant pressure of the auto CCT but, like you say, any chain that stretches or snaps as a result of that pressure wouldn't even stand the usual forces that operate on it. I think what others have commented on though is the wear to the rubbery bit of the blade of the tensioner. However, I'd say the same logic applies.... a poorly adjusted OEM CCT will allow the chain to slap around and bikes can be run for years like that without the rubbery bits of the assembly suffering much. I suspect, therefore, that those same bits will take the constant pressure of the auto CCT. They do in the VMax and other bikes eh?

And its not like its constant high pressure. Just enough to keep the plunger riding on the guide bar. I look forward to installing mine and never adjusting a leaky CCT again. For 9 bucks and some RTV how could a fella go wrong?

I just ordered a couple Raptor tensioners off e-bay this morning from the same seller. The total came to about $20 shipped, but they say they'll refund part of the shipping for combined shipping. Awesome!

I went on Ebay just now and typed in Raptor Cam Chain Tensioner and came up with half a dozen under $20....

All I did was same as Nate did. Used boats.net site and typed in the part number of one I knew worked. Then it gives a list of what other bikes use that same part. Whatever Raptor, yr, model etc. All you have to do is find the part number on the one you want and it will automatically tell you all other models that use that part. It was very helpful in finding headlight dampers for my 81LH.
While on the subject of those headlight Dampers I must say we Canadians get so ripped off by UPS. I tried Bikebandit and was quoted $38.10 for shipping. The parts are equivalent in size to 3 USD quarters each and are made of rubber. The cost was something in the range of $24 for the rubbers. I also tried ronayers and they could not accept my postal code, so that went nowhere. I went to boats.net and while they were mid range in price (about 8 bucks each damper), The whole thing shipped to my door was $28.10.
I talked to bikebandit and as that is the only shipping they use for international orders I was screwed. I told them that as long as they use UPS I could not be a customer unless it was the only part available anywhere. I got my Morgan Carbtune sent from the UK for $7 bucks. Geeze the brokerage that UPS charges is phenominal. Do any Canadian members a favor and never ship UPS if they buy a part from you.
Sorry I know that part was off topic but a rant is something that can not be denied.

It used to be shipping to Canada wasn't a big deal or all that expensive. I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden a lot of options disappeared and it got much more expensive. I suspect it may be related to 9/1/01, but I've never gotten a definitive answer. And I'll agree about UPS; they're the shipper of last resort for me anymore, even domestically....

Remember that flush mount light kit I pondered putting on the trunk of "old man" before I decided to beat my head against the wall with a trailer box and LED's? Well I offered it up to anyone that needed it as I had no use for it. "Fredintoon" Wanted it so I gave it to him. He emailed me and told me DO NOT SHIP IT UPS so I shipped it USPS it cost me a $1.49 for the box and $4.90 for the shipping to send the light kit to him in SK Canada. I was just gonna toss em to my shipping guy @ the office and have him ship them. Glad I didn't I would have cried when he put my bill on the desk. Fred said its like a $30 carrier fee to send stuff from my side of the border to yours. Ridiculous!

I think this is why most places on Ebay with "free shipping" are shipping via USPS. especially ones that sell from China and GB. off topic but good info none the less
