  • Starter noise question

K sure you guys are thinking... God not another Don project. not a project just a question

Sometimes when the starter disengages it makes a high pitch squeaky noise. if anyone needs an example I'm sure I can catch it on film. usually happens when fired cold on full choke. every once in awhile it happens after warmed up and re-fired a few minutes later. doesnt seem to effect starting. just annoying and I'm sure not suppose to happen

Normal, specially for those livin where it gets cold and bike left outside. Just the motor kickin back a bit bout same time starter is tryin' to disengage........sumptin to that effect anyways. Mine, when new was left out in winter, covered with heat lamp under it, but starter still didn't like -25degrees(neither did I, but younger and full of p$$s and vinegar, rode it to work the 10mi. anyways) and would kick back with the starter whine thing.

I've heard starter whine before... that might be it but this is squeaky! like I said it don't seem to hurt anything. its just one of them noises that would make the dog's ears perk and head turn sideways

I know exactly which noise you're talking about. It's my belief that it happens when the motor kicks and gives the starter motor a little momentum after it disengages. I've had my starter motor apart about 15 times lately. I think the insulation on some of the brush wires had come off and it was grounding out. It was making some seriously crazy noises.

I think it's the starter clutch making that noise when the engine kicks back and spins the starter backwards. It's espcially noticable when the oil is cold.

It will do it sometimes even if the engine starts when it's cold.

If you pull the starter out, (Disconnect the battery wire and three 10mm screws) you'll see two long screws that go the length of the outside of the starter body. Remove those two screws and the silver cap comes off. (Don't worry.. no surprises or spring-loaded stuff.) You'll then see a little button that goes up into the starter cap. This is a bearing of sorts and helps keep the windings and such on line when spinning. If you put just a tiny dab of grease on this button... not much because you don't want it getting slung into the windings.. and button it back up, it will stop the dying duck sound you hear.

The complicated technical term for it is "bushing". And, I'll do that. Thanks.

thanks for the advice. Ya the first time it happened I was waiting for a creature to come out the tail pipe. I shut of the bike, turned out the garage light, walked inside, and waited
