Doing the 2nd gear fix on my 80. Got the bike flipped over onto two tires and hoisted up. I put the tranny in 4th gear but now that the bike is flipped the gears are all free wheeling - is this normal? Here's a pic:

If the back wheel spins freely, then you are in between gears, if it stops you should be in 4th, then go ahead and remove the countershaft for gear repairs.2H7 (79) owned since '89

You should be able to rotate the shift drum end with just your hand, don't need to move it very far. Slightly rotate the rear wheel while moving the shift drum, you are probably in false neutral between 4th and 5th.2H7 (79) owned since '89

That will make it a lot easier ! Took me 3 hours to strip the bike and flip it over and hoist it up. Hopefully tomorrow I can finish the tranny work. Luckily I picked up a complete tranny from a bike yard. So I'll have spare parts in the event I screw up.1980G Tourer

OF course, once you pull the clutch basket off, nothing links the "engine" as in crank shaft, and primary shaft to the transmission. So the rear wheel will still spin and turn the transmission gears no matter what gear your in, but should give some resistance. And even in nuetral, there will be some of the gears in there spinning. If it helps, here is a picture of what the shift drum position looks like when it is in fourth, on an upright bike that is, rotate the pic 180 for your current arrangment.....

Thanks I didn't think so.
Another question. When I cleaned the sludge out of the oil pan found a washer and circlip in the center of the pan.
I suspect they are from the shift fork shaft here:
The parts diagram doesn't show a circlip and washer on that end of the shaft although they fit perfect ??Last edited by gaillarry; 02-07-2012, 11:22 AM.1980G Tourer

Both that little washer and the circlip came off that same shaft, but on the clutch side. I would replace that circlip with new if it's distorted any amount. The washer goes on shaft and rides against the oil pump idler gear and snap ring holds it all in place. Not to be alarmed as that finding is more common than you think.81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.
