I have seen many post pros and cons on OEM pipes, just wanted to know what is the best after market system IYHO and why.
Also, JFYI here is a NOS OEM part I found, $$$$, but you can always make an offer if you like

New from factory was 358 bucks here for that part in about 1984 when I needed a set. The Jardine spaghetti pipes were the best aftermarket from what I know. The Jardines were 440 bucks for the set back then so that is what is on my 79SF.

Ya, I hear you, I am not the selled and just asking cuz I got a bud that ask me what is the best after market and I dont have any experance with any except MAC 4 into 2 and I was not impressed with that one

That would only be correct for the scoots across the pond. Stateside, the 81H and 81SH shared the same short , upswept mufflers. Of course, the XJ's mufflers were upswept, short and outer shell was an even different configuration.

it's not what's best, it's what's available.
Alas that MAC is the only affordable new system these days.
Well, there's the real nice stainless systems from Germany but you need to be a trust-fund kid to pay for one of those.
Luckily for the average impoverished DIYer, the mufflers tend to rust out while the headers are still structurally sound so cutting, welding, Hi-temp spray paint & salvaging mufflers from a different bike can get you back on the road in an affordable manner:-



Black manifold paint + weld-on exhaust stubs with 1960s Triumph mufflers bought for $30 the pair at a swap meet.

What are the issues with the MAC 4-2 pipes? I really dislike the looks of my 4-1, and would like to change out to 4-2.

No issues here, had 'em for 8 years. As long as you jet right, you shouldn't have issues with anything (except NO mufflers)

As Randy said, performance-wise they're fine. Most complaints I've seen have been that the plating isn't the best and if you don't stay on top of them keeping them clean/polished, the plating can go bad pretty fast...

Or, like me who bought one of those lovely German systems, you need to work hard, save up, do without other things, economise and then buy one.

They are expensive though but they are well, made, fairly authentic looking (complete with 'Yamaha' part number) and sound exactly as OEM. They are also made of very thick stainless steel, as opposed to the thinner variety used by many after-market manufacturers, and this is an important factor in silencing. They have a silencer balance box, not just a tube, and baffles as opposed to a straight through pipe. Mine needed some modification to allow the centrestand to retract fully and that was rather annoying on such an expensive item. All in all, I suspect that this exhaust system would outlast a bike.....

Ah well, back to low budget bodgery.

They're single skin and the same internal diameter as the OEM. I don't think it's that critical though. The system silences the engine but still allows a good exhaust flow because of using baffles and having the silencer box that joins the two sides. The downpipes yellow a bit... well they go gold but I quite like it as it generally fits the look of the bike. It's certainly preferable to the rusty chrome which the OEM ones developed very quickly indeed.

I had a brand-new one and I'd say the German system (no website unfortunately) is exactly the same in terms of volume, engine note and performance. I love it. Unfortunately, they cost $1600 or so. It's a LOT of money and I found it difficult to justify but, having experienced a $1,000 made to order system which was awful, I think it's money well spent.

I'll not be earning for much longer either really. That's the downside of getting older for most people, methinks. I've always done low budget bodgery too (even when younger) but this particular XS1100 was so special to me that I couldn't resist spending 2 months' net pay on it........
