Just when I thought I was getting a handle on these carbs. I 've been reading the different manuals and low and behold I find something I didn't know. I see that the STARTER JET is different for various models and years. The E being #40, F&SF-#32.5 and the LH &SH are #25. Not sure on the G's as I don't have a manual for them. Now here is my question, where the heck is the starter jet? A close look at the plunger tunnel showed two holes. One leads through from the diaphrams to the venturi and the one closer to the center I assume leads to the idle mixure screw tunnel. Or am I wrong and that hole leads to the 3 small holes at the top of the venturi immediately behind the butterfly. Third possibility is, the jet located in the carb bowls. Any enlightenment would be useful. So no matter the location, the early carbs are not comletely interchangeable from 78&79 bikes.

The starter jet is the smaller of the two air jets in the air cleaner side of the carb. The larger the jet the less fuel/more air will be drawn up when the enricher (choke) is being used.

It controls the amount of raw fuel being dumped into the cylinders on startup when the enricher is used. it is also where the idle mixture screws get their air.

At least that's how I understand it. I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm mistaken.

      Thanx Greg

I see you have a couple G's, could you check your manuals and see if they are #25's same as the H's?Since the emission standards started to change in 79 and were fully in effect by 1980, I assume it is related. Funny about the size change though. If the E's were leaned out during warm up you'd think they would be more EPA acceptable.

I believe those jets are pressed in and aren't removable; they're not shown on any carb parts diagram I've seen. As to how they'll affect the bikes running, it's basically only on choke that they do anything and the size has to do with the other jet sizes. Should have no noticable effect once the bike is warmed and running down the road....

Here's a jetting chart I picked up from the Aussie site Mack.

              Thanx one & all

My confusion was looking for something in the choke plunger tunnel. Who would have thought a metered port to the main tower to be related to the starter ciruit. Good to learn something everyday.
              Thanx again.
