        Dang! > ......the more I talk to you > the more I NEED to talk to you ! (turbox79) .

        .......Now, I got a good one for you :> ? What is Bob Jones (Merriamcycles) doing for taller gearing, to get the top speed(s) mph, that I've heard, bantied about.......with his "re-manufactured" XS's ??

        ........?? either in the transmission, or somewhere between the transmission and rear wheel............??.........or all the above ??.......

          I dont know about trans gears but on my xs with a 17 inch wheel my top speed is faster on the street but at the track I go thrugh the traps in 4th gear and with a 16 inch wheel I go through in 5th so thats how I gear it.
          17=salt flats
          16=1/4 mile
          I wish I could get a 15 inch wheel and better test

            .......for a good long time, that's the reason, I've wanted to put
            the 17' rear wheel, from my organ donater Standard > on my
            Special. The 17' tire on the rim, is about 2 inches more in circumference, than the 16' tire mounted on its rim. All kinds of threads and postings on here >"? how to get less RPM at same MPH ? "..........; you're the first one to post -- one of the ways, actually in use.

            I've always, really wanted to do it, cuz I figured it would handle a tad better. Would be a larger "tire patch" contact on the road.
            Hadn't read yer last post yet; it just now came on, while I was typing this.

              It doesnt matter on my bike on handling because i run a tiny front wheel and no suspension so straight is all it goes.straight and fast

                Hey there Turbo,

                I editted your message a few messages above, then I realized that you had that picture link in your "Signature" . Are you wanting to display that picture everytime you post a message, to be added to your signature, or were you trying to provide the "LINK" so folks could go to it if they wanted to see it?
                Have you thought about shrinking it down to make it an AVATAR image? Didn't mean to but in, just trying to help, "if" it's wanted!!

                To make it a working link you need to remove the extra ".orig.jpg" at the end of the file name after the first ".jpg" !

                And to Carlton,

                I have the same bike, and am able to run a Dunlop 140/90x16, the raised letters rubbed just a little against the left driveshaft / swingarm, but otherwise fits okay and rides nicely. I don't know how much more of a lengthwise contact patch you would get with the 17" vs. the 16", but the above does give a nicer "wider" contact area!

                  Is yours still rubbin' ? I've got that same size tire in a Kenda. About 5000 miles on it. It never did rub, but there wuz very little
                  daylight between tire and driveshaft housing. Might be about
                  the clearance of a thin sheet of paper. Never did touch..........

                    The raised white letters were just slightly beyond/above the edge of the actual sidewall, so after the 'crown' wore off, there wasn't anything else to rub, the sidewalls don't contact at all! It was amazing how much better the handling was after I put that tire on, was running the mountains in Ga. and Tenn. during the last fall rally, made a big difference!! Still scraped mufflers and footpegs though!!

                      Yep, I can remember how happy I was with the improvement in
                      handling when I did put that new tire on; but, at the same time, I
                      did put on a new tire on the front, though. I wuz really ecstatic, when about a year later, I put the fork brace on............

                          Hey there Turbo,

                          I just went to the Dunlop Motorcycle Tire page, they list only a
                          MT90/16=130/90x16 Raised White Letter at 5.20" wide.
                          MU90/16=140/90x16 RWL is 5.57" wide.

                          They don't list a 140/80, they show a 160/80x16 at 6.10" wide!!

                          I forgot to mention, mine is a special, and I think folks have stated that there is a little more room due to the extra spacer vs. Standards!?

                          I was trying to find info/description on clarifying what the 140/90 info means, I thought it was the total diameter in mm of the tread, by the height of the sidewall? My sidewall if you include the bead would be 90mm, but my total tread surface measurement across the curve of the tire is 160mm, however if I could draw a straight line across from one edge of the tread bead to the other, it might be actually only 140mm wide?

                          So, I would think that a tire that is 140mm tread width with only 80mm sidewall would be a bit shorter, but not necessarily much wider, but it would vary from brand to brand, and tire style !?

                          PS, I can't edit your profile for your signature, you'll have to do that yourself, but I think that picture, cropped and shrunk would make a decent AVATAR!!!

                                Tire numeral explanation:

                                http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...formation.html

                                It uses a cage tire, but the explanation is OK.
