  • Rear Master Cylinder XJ1100 frustration

I rebuilt the rear master cylinder and calipers. I have been searching for the proper understanding of what and how the bleed bolt(14mm) attached to the master cylinder is used. I am fine on the bleed screws on the calipers. But is this how you refill during bleed off? Or is it an actual bleed valve for the master cylinder you have to bleed first and you refill with the top off? The front is rebuilt blead and works great This rear master cylinder has me confused?

Frustration can come from the fact that rear is linked to left front.......XJ= linked brakes.

      Coaster,
I just bled mine with a mighty vac to fill the lines first, then I did the standard bleeding procedure starting with the front caliper. It's not that hard. They came right up.
BTW - Where did you get the rebuild kit for the rear master cylinder ? As far as I know they're not available any more.....???

        Rear Master Cylinder

I purchased this bike from a guys wife who passed away 10 years ago it has been sitting since then she could just not part with it It is really in great condition It had boxes and boxes of spare parts this guy had everything spare for this bike The rubbers looked good on the old one they were all gunked up but I replaced them anyway along with the front and all the seals on the brakes he even had new pistons the front is done and works great I went for a trial run over the weekend on fronts very slow This bike is all original and in excellent shape for sitting 10 years I have been working on it for 3 weeks 2 carb cleans and it runs really nice I gave her my word I would put this beauty back on the road in original condition and keep it My wife is so into this bike I am looking for another a little smaller I just wanted to confirm if the 14mm was a fill plug?

My 81 lh has the same system and I fill mine by taking the top off.

That bolt in the side is for filling the MC while bleeding. I used a slurpee straw as a tiny funnel to pour the fluid in there. Recently, I had my dad's shop make a fancy connector for that spout with a barb on it so I can attach a bottle filled with fluid. It then drains into the MC, and I can see when the bottle is empty and refill it.

I think you just solved my bleeding problem!!! I took apart my rear caliper and rear master cylinder and cleaned them all up. I've been trying for a couple of days to get the rear pedal hard, but i never bled the front! I wondered how I could have two master cylinders in the same "system". The line from the rear M/C to the front requires that the front needs bleeding also, is this correct?

On the XJ the rear and the front left caliper are connected as one system and the front right is a separate system.

Chacal sells them on the XJbikes.com site. That is the only place I have been able to fine them. That's why I replaced my LH rear MC with the XJ version. I couldn't find the rebuild kits for the LH MC anywhere.

I use an ear syringe to fill the rear MC on my XJ while bleeding it. Cheap and effective.
