  • My huge project that is shaping up

at least, I'm obtaining more parts now that are more specifically defining the bike I'm going to end up with someday

    here's what I've got:
    '79 XS11 frame/gas tank
    '96 CBR900rr swingarm/rear wheel/brake/shock
and I just paid deposit on a '07 GSXR 750 complete engine kit with 3,500 miles only!

So with that figured, bike will probably get some R1 front end forks/wheel/etc.

One bigger concern is how the stock tank will conflict with the 750 engine throttle bodies that are coming straight vertical from the top/back of the engine.
I've done a lot of work on this tank already, cut out matching left and right sides to swap/re-weld up, and fiberglass-bondo, etc work that's come since then. Maybe combo of a custom-inlet-manifold, and slightly altered tank mounting points can make it work.

I've got some buddies that are welders and custom bike builders that will be helping me on this project, so that I'm able to make progress on it, I've got many projects haha.

Here are pics of parts/previous work:

(look, at this point I still thought my frame would get a stock XS11 engine again! no matter)

It would be a great help, if anyone could post threads or even point to specific posts in threads, that will help me and my buddy to start mounting the custom swingarm and getting it centered to the frame.
I know about XSChop's 'who want's a bolt-on chain-drive and fat tire?' thread from 2007. I still need to find some specifics in a post..

      lol

yamazuki sounds about right to me.

Ya like I said, first step for us at this point is locating some more info that is on this forum, and getting the CBR swingarm mounted in the centerline of the frame.

I'd go with Yamazukida. Keep posting pics. Sounds like it will definately have some character when you are finished. Good luck.

Wow, not really sure what is going on here!

I hope that you have some gixxer forks to go with that, because the old xspipes will not be able to cope! Better brakes are a must, too. I would be for studying some frame geometry, and doing some bracing as well, since the stock frame could barely contain the stock engine.

I think I see what you are going for here, but without some good planning, you willendup with the likes of a small block Chevy in a coaster wagon!

          Keep it up, man!

Some people will tell you that slow is good - and it may be, on some days - but I am here to tell you that fast is better. I’ve always believed this, in spite of the trouble it’s caused me. nice, ^yeah that's about right
making the engine fit w/ the gas tank and then more frame support would be the plan
R1 or gixxer front forks/brakes would work, I already have the '96 CBR 900rr swingarm and rear brake..
About a week and I should get the engine delivered.

              Hi Tajman,
you sure you want that heavy old-fashioned XS11 frame in the middle of all that modern gear? OK then:-
Start with installing the swingarm so that the rear wheel is centred in line with the steering head. The fork install should automatically put the front wheel there too.
Check out where the rear sprocket is. The engine final drive sprocket needs to be dead in line with it even if that means the engine has to be mounted offset.
Is the new engine shorter than the XS11 one? If there's room for fore and aft spacing choice, mount the engine as far forward as it will go.

My XS11 frame is still going to be a badass build eventually mostly sportbike-oriented,

but there is a possibility things have changed.
I'm getting a Fiat X1/9, and its begging for the gixxer 1000 engine kit I already have!
just throwing that out there, if I use the engine kit in the car, I'll have to find a different bike engine for the XS project.

this X1/9 actually has a GSXR 1000 engine in it!:

Why not just use an XS engine? It is already set up to mount perfectly in the frame.

                    I like building custom machines
The XS engine was great for the time
but now I'd prefer to build something with a larger V-twin or newer sportbike-engine power, chain-drive with a wider rear tire, I would still like to use the complete CBR900 rear swingarm/wheel.
