Since I posted a few parts for sale recently, been getting a few rquests for keys. I only have afew keys left & they all are part of fuel locks, ignition locks, etc.

BUT, for those members that have a lock number, there;'s still hope.

I've dealt with keysinthepost.com in the past. They're in the UK. all you need is the lock number & they will cut & ship you a new key. Takes about 2-3 weeks, & is around $23-24 US including shipping.
I know others have sources as well, but I've dealt with theses guys & had great service.

Just remove the ignition lock and take it to your local locksmith and he can make a key for it a lot cheaper than that.

These ignition locks are far from complicated.

It really helps to have the right blank key to get one made at a locksmith...at least that was my experience. They find one that fits into the hole and then they cut...

The locksmith I went to to get extras made had no problem with blanks but if you want look here...... http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from...All-Categories

XSs had two different configuations though and they don't interchange.

I tried a local locksmith today and he tried to get me for 60 bucks with me providing the blank. Talked him down to 25. FWIW the number is on the gas tank lock also. one of mine has different keys for each

WoW!! $60??!! I think mine was $15.00 to make the first one, including the blank, and then $3.00 for each one after that. Mind you, that WAS 10 years ago, but it can't have risen that much.

I just took the lock cylinders out of my old ones and put them in the new parts. All are still keyed the same.

Are original OEM key blanks still available? Getting a key that works is easy, finding a nice looking one is not.

I've seen the correct Yamaha blanks at Ace Hardware a couple years ago, they had a lot of different motorcycle key blanks surprisingly.

Should I take this post to mean that keys are no longer available at the dealer or is it just that the cost is prohibitive. On my things to do list before the weather breaks is to get a second key for both bikes but haven't checked with any dealers yet, I have been surprised in the past by the amount of small parts that are still available from Yamaha, however not necessarily affordable.

Last I checked with my dealer they could still get me a key, but it was like $20 for a single key, and like a week to get it. And it didn't matter if I had a key already or not. And I could go down to a local locksmith and get all the key made for a fraction of that (bike, fairing, bags and trunk, bags are the only ones with matching keys other than the bike locks all matching).
