    Need specs cuz I'm dumb.

I brought the bike to work today so I could tear off the cam cover and check valve clearances as well as installing the auto-CCT I just got. The problem is: I left my manual sitting on my kitchen counter (30 miles away) and I don't know the specs. Help!

    Ji Jase,
if you can post out you can use the search button?
    Both topics are covered.

Did. Searching "valve clearance" yields a lot of how to do it, (and how NOT to do it,) but I dug through a dozen threads without finding an actual number range that I should be shooting for with the valves. At that point it became easier to ask.

NM I finally found it midway through a thread on the second page of search results. .006-.008 intake and .008-.010 exhaust. Thanks anyway.

I was just going to post that. You beat me by a minute. Do you want the metric numbers? I find the search to yield far to many posts unless I get it worded exactly what it wants, not what I want

Nah my feelers are in thousandths anyway, and I read the thread a while back that explained how the valve shims increment by .002" per step, so I'm good. Thanks though. >.o

not sure what model bike u have but for the
later model engines they dropped the intake
clearances to 4-6 thou, i use those specs for the
early engines as well with good results.

My girl is an SF that's mostly original. Valve clearances came up good, with only one intake and one exhaust being on the low end of spec. It's good to know that going by the later specs I still have some room. Got the auto-CCT installed too, with no fuss.

Next up: carb jetting! PO put aftermarket 4-2 turnout exhaust on her and ran that with stock jets for a decade. Header pipes have 8 inches of deep blue and she's lean across the board.

Those ARE the correct type jets for '79 carbs, right?

Also: it's usually ME whistling at the girls, not the other way 'round. Mebbe the bike will change that. >.>

4 into 2 turnouts? Sounds like a Mac setup like I have. Those pipes are single walled pipes and bluing is something that just comes natural to them. Just get used to it. You'll probably be causing yourself more grief than necessary.

Stock pipes don't blue due to the fact they are double walled and the chrome is insulated from the VERY hot inner pipe. Unless they are extremely lean bluing doesn't occur.

I just put a brand new set of Mac 4 into 2 pipes on mine in september and I've got blueing already starting and my engine is running perfectly. Here's a pic.....

After several years (a decade) it will darken and lengthen as is obvious on the set, which is exactly the same, that I took off shows.

Duly noted BA, it's good to know the lean running issue may not be as severe as I thought. Still, the plugs want more fuel and she doesn't have the 'scary' power that I've seen some of you guys talk about. With the 4-2 and pod filters I KNOW it needs jetted up. I'm gonna order a set of 45 pilots and some 142.5 and 145 mains and see what works best. Maybe they'll make it here by next weekend....
