  • pods again

I noticed the pod filters I'm going to install have more than twice the depth of material where they clamp onto the carbs, than actually sticks out of the carb. Now I was planning on moding them with some extensions to allow for the rubber lip blocking the air flow, but it seems it really isn't blocking it, it may require the air to travel in less than a straight line, but wouldn't be restricted at all. Any of you use the pods with no problems without modding the rubber boot connecting them.

On my pod filters the flange is about 5/8 " long and all I did to install them was to tighten the clamps no modifications needed. The only issue I have had was when I took them off to clean them and didn't tighten one of the clamps properly and had one of the filters come off while going down the road.

"it may require the air to travel in less than a straight line"

The strait line dosen't matter if you mean off to one side or the other, the stock breather does that. As long as there is no restriction in flow and they clamp tight and not leaks, or fall off you will be good

What you need to check with pods is to make sure they don't block any of the openings in the perimeter of the carb bell, like for the air jet or the diaphram inlet. Even only a partial blockage will cause problems. Some of the 'cheap' pods have this issue, which can be fixed by trimming the rubber boots. But for a few $ more, you can get ones that don't need this mod with much less hassle...

I went for the less-expensive pods with the big inner lip. I took the rubber boots that connect the carbs to the factory air box, chopped them short, and used them as extensions on the filters. It all fits nicely and doesn't look half bad, other than the two sets of clamps. Next time I have them off I may rubber-cement the pods to the extensions to correct that.

The only catch is that if I ever want to go back stock, I'll have to find a set of the connecting boots.
