So I've spent the last 10 days going through the harness and fixing broken wires, bad splices and cleaning all the contacts. Checked the continuity and installed TC's fuse block. Now I'm finally ready to tape it all back into a harness. Went to the bldg center and bought several rolls of electrical tape. I come home and peel the packages open to start and the tape won't stick to anything ,not even itself. Man how things have gone cheap. I remember when electrical tape was near impossible to get off, and if you wanted to separate it from itself, it was easier to slice it and peel that back like snake skin. How cheaply made everything is now. Half the amount of toilet paper per roll, bags of chips filled with air, herb and pesticides that are little more than dish soap, higher prices for less volumn in the same size box on eveything from cerial to soap. Brasso doesn't shine brass anymore, gears in power tools are made of plastic and now tape that doesn't stick. I'm soooo glad my rides are over 30 years old. Back then things were manufactured to perform the duties for which they were intended!!!

Gorilla
Gorilla duct tape, one roll will do, and it sticks like you wont beleive It also adds a layer of protection as it is very resistant to wearing through if it rubs anywhere If you want to stay more stock, use this:

Mack, you bought what electricians refer to as 'crap tape' or 'jap wrap' (which is now made in China...lol)....
Buy the good stuff; there's a huge difference. Get either Plymouth Premium or Scotch 33+. Yeah, it'll cost you better than $5 per roll, but you won't have issues with it sticking or find a gooey, unravelled mess a year after. All we ever used it for was temporary things, or as 'filler' under the good tape (in both cases it works fine); anything that was to be a permanent installation got the high-priced spread..
It does help a bunch if everything is warm, or at least the tape, whether it's good or cheap tape; but crap tape is notorious for working very poorly when it's cold.Last edited by crazy steve; 01-11-2012, 04:22 PM.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Main fuse
So I've got the harness in up to the coils now. I just want to thank the designers and engineers at Yamaha for leaving soooo much clearance and finger room to make all the connections. Shop looks there has been a knife fight over there. Knuckles are in sad shape. Anyway I'll take this oportunity to demonstrate how stupid I am by asking this question. Why did they put the main fuse in a holder on the opposite side of the bike rather than in the fuse block?mack

Why? Who can know.... I would surmise that they didn't want to 'tool up' for another fuse panel design, although they didn't have any qualms about having multiple seat/sidecover/fork/fender/brake designs....
By the way, that 'crap wrap' tape makes fair-to-middlin' temporary bandaids...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Fuse
Some are calling the fuse that is outside the main OEM fuse box, the main fuse, some say ACC, fuse that does nothing on a 79SF, what is itOriginally posted by jetmechmarty View PostWhen I installed TC's fuse box, I moved the main fuse into it. Thanks
Thanks Phil, getting ready to do my fusebox, the OEM sucks So I am guessing no need to mess with the one outside the box, as I have no acc's on the bike?

I'm trying
to keep this fairly original, although some upgrades are just a good idea. TC's fuse block, Tkat fork brace, Geezers regulator and the conversion of the braking system. I've kept all the original stuff and could put it back on if I was to sell the bike in the future, but that probably isn't going to happen. My estate will have to liquidate them when the time comes.
Heh Nubian, what kind of neighborhood you living in where someone would steal a mans main fuse and leave his ride?mack
