I recently picked up an old RC Engineering 4 into 1 for my SF, and it didn't come with any collars. How did these attach to the head? Did they use stock pieces (which I do not have) or did they come with their own? Anyone experienced with these old pipes? It is a little rough, but has a really cool shape.

Exhaust flanges/collars for header?

As far as I know, all of the aftermarket pipes used their own flanges, I don't think any used the OEM flange pieces?! I would contact the person you got the pipes from and inquire about the flanges.
I have a set of JC Whitney/Mac made 4-1's, and they have flanges mounted to them..they are loose and spin to allow positioning/alignment with the head pipe studs.
Are the pipes you have chrome or black/ceramic? You may be able to take them to a local muffler shop to have some flanges made and then welded to the headers if you don't have the tools? JAT!

This is what you'll be looking for. These are on my spare motor, if you can't find anything closer to you, we can arrange something.

There were no flanges on this header. My Jardine has them permanently attached, as do the Kerker and Yosh pipes for my KZ. I have seen pics of other XS1100 RC pipes, and they didn't have flanges on them.
I do know that my Vance & Hines pipe on the KZ used the OEM flanges, and their header design was basically a ripoff of their old boss RC's design.
Mack, do you know what brand of header those flanges came from?1979 Yamaha XS1100SF (gone)

Eric,
My 4x1 RC Engineering exhaust has flanges, albeit small ones. What I found interesting when I took them off my XJ is that the collars are 2-piece units that come apart and allow their removal and that of the so called "nut ring", the oval part that actually bolts to the head.1980G Standard, Restored

Thanks Cobia. So that is why they are no longer on my header. I guess I'm going to have to get creative to get this thing installed.1979 Yamaha XS1100SF (gone)

You could probably use the same method Harley does to install/retain the flanges. On theirs, the flange on the pipe is small enough to go right through the 'nut 'ring', then once it's slipped onto the pipe, you install a large c-clip on the pipe. The clip ID needs to be just big enough to fit tightly onto the pipe right next to the flange and the OD small enough to fit into the flange recess in the nut ring. The Harley clip won't work (too big), but some seaching through a selection of large clips should turn something up. This will be the type of clip that's round (no holes for c-clip pliers); these are found on large power shafts (like inside transmissions) usually. Worth looking into....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Great info, thanks. So I need a 1.5" diameter split exhaust flange. I haven't had luck finding any online so far, but I'll keep looking.1979 Yamaha XS1100SF (gone)

That is a simple setup. My problem is that the header pipes themselves have a flange "built in" at the top. That means all one piece flanges have to be larger diameter to fit over. I wonder if you could also cut a one piece flange in half, and then simply bolt up the two halves.1979 Yamaha XS1100SF (gone)

Flange
No, that style flange has a hole in it that is bigger then the flair on the down pipes so it slips over the flair, then you open the c clip enough to get it over the flair, then you compress the c clip enough to fit in the flange grove and bingo, you got a flange that fits
