has anyone ever tried to build a air filter system for a 4 to 2 air filter. like the spiked ones you see on the newer bike. one filter coming out each side and would it be better than the pods. my bike came with pods but i would like something different than the air box or pods

K&N has dual carb pods that fit our carb banks. They are supposed to work well, and look decent, but I'm not sure how easy it would be to build something like that. My XS400 is setup like that, with the filter systems on either side of the battery box, but with the layout of stuff on the 11 I'm not sure how well that would work.

          Hey Pase,

I don't recall seeing anyone posting about a custom intake like that. Most folks want to keep the airfilters under the tank to protect them from RAIN. Sounds like the tribute machine you're making may only be ridden in fair weather, and so external exposed air filters may work okay. But sticking out the sides could get in the way of your legs, since the XS11 engine is much wider than "other" bikes with side mounted filters..aka in line twins!

Folks have used plumbing fixtures/parts for intake mods, you might be able to find things like Y's or T type fittings to allow you to direct the intake to the sides? But it's been suggested to try to keep the intake tubes fairly long and straight prior to going into the carbs to help straighten and smooth out the air flow into the carbs throat! Putting bends too close to the carb throat "COULD" adversely affect the performance and tunability! YMMV!
