Not really. The pliers have a ratcheting lock on them, so you squeeze them down till they ALMOST grip the piston, and they stay there. All by themselves.
And if you are really sharp, you will have previously made a small angle champher on the bottom edges of the cylinders, so that the rings have a ramp to run on as they slide into the bore.
When the rings are safely up in the bore, and the band is down on the skirt, (remember, it didn't grip the piston) you unlock the pliers and remove them, and rotate the band until you can slide it down and past the rod and out.

yes sir... i know. I've used these for the last 15 years. But what is being said here is to put the slug in the hole you may need 2 sets to stab the slugs up in the hole. and I joked about having 4 hands... If your trying to stab 2 @ the same time with 2 ring compressors your gonna need 4 hands...

if you haven't abused your plyers these will hold on the ratchet once you close them up. (i still like to keep my hands on them for just in case) but if your stabbing @ 2 the same time you will need 2 sets of compressors.

I still say its easier to put pistons in one at a time on a bench then put the cylinder on and insert wrist pins one at a time that is if you do not have 4 little bitty hands
To fix the problem one should not make more assumptions than the minimum needed.
