  • max tire size

Is anyone running a 140-80-17 rear tire on a standard? The local Canadian Tire store has one in their clearance bin and I need to know if it would fit my 78E. I've searched various threads in the forum, but can't find anything on this size. It would probably be about 5 1/2 inches wide if I'm reading the conversion table correctly.

Past reports indicates it will will not fit, rubs the swing arm, particuarly on turns when the tire flexes a bit....

1st number is ire width in mm. The 140 is 10mm wider than the stock 130.

2nd set of number is the aspect ratio, calculated by height of tire divided by width of tire, take that result x 100. The final result is a percentage. An 80 series tire is not as tall as a 90 series tire.

    3rd number is rim diameter.

4th numbers are load rating. (66 = 300 KG total load carrying capacity. Higher numbers = more weight, lower numbers = less weight.)

    Last letter is maximum speed rating. (N = 93, S = 112, H = 130, V > 130, all MPH.)

In our case, the other numbers are not as important (you do want to get sufficient load capacity) but it is the width that is the real problem. There just isn't much clearance to fit a larger 140mm tire.

I bought my '78E with a 5.10H17 on the back. It never rubbed, but came darn close. I don't see how you could fit larger than that.

Rats! Thanks for the info Jerry. I thought a chunky tire would look pretty cool back there.
