No. The bolt spread, center to center, is not the same on the two. Will not work.Nathan

Yes. The fuel level sender is different between the two models and are on opposite sides of the take so you would have to take the special sender and flip it over and move it to the other side of the tank, but other than that it would work fine. I actually had a special tank on my standard when I first got it.
The standard tank holds something like 5 gallons and the special holds something like 4 gallons.Nathan

It should be noted that the 'nose' of the seats is slightly different, so you might have to slightly modify the seat. This is seems to be more of a problem if installing a standard tank on a special rather than the other way, but keep it in mind...Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Yeah, these are future mods and something to bs about, I'd really prefer to have at least a 5 gallon tank, and have one with just standard 3 way vacuum controlled petcocks without the aid of an octy. If I was unclear, I was considering a standard tank on a special. Has anyone out there mod any other 5 gallon tanks to fit and look cosmetically decent, not talking about making one from scratch. From another bike, can even be non-Yamaha with minimal mods.
OR....just fix up my special and sell it to buy a standard..lol81 XS1100H

25%
Yea, that is 25% more fuel, means alot if you take long rides, but when you are my age, you look forward to getting off and pretending it is only because you need more gas, not you need to get off you a$$, just keeping it clean

Not an issue Steve.......the front of seat is soft and rides upward a bit..........could be a good thing........cushion for your junk.......BTW, the Venturer tank @6.4gal is even better........81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

I'm hoping when I'm finished with the bike, I can make regular trips from my home to WV, approx 256-300 miles one way depending on the scenery I want to take in. My parents are getting older, and want to be able to check in on them from time to time, at least in the spring/summer/fall riding months and fuel cost is a big consideration, which why I want to use the bike. Plus its a great excuse to get down there and do more fishing/camping. I'm sure I'll have to stop at least once for fuel, but I don't want to HAVE to stop, I want to stop WHEN I want.81 XS1100H

the 81 model was called the Venturer. it was a standard with a factory touring setup and large tank. Looks like like a standard tank just taller.Nathan
