  • Hiflofiltro filters any good?

    Dear all,

I hope everyone is doing well. I usually buy FRAM, but are HiFlo filters worth a damn? Any opinions on what the best filter out there would be?

oil, I found some FRAM filters a while back (NOS on Ebay)

    Thanks all,

    Andrew

filter for what.............air or oil?.............and Fram doesn't make either for these scoots.
81H Venturer1100 "The Bentley" (on steroids) 97 Yamaha YZ250(age reducer) 92 Honda ST1100 "Twisty"(touring rocket) Age is relative to the number of seconds counted 'airing' out an 85ft. table-top.

Wix or NAPA, about $6. The Wix number is 24933, should be able to order one anywhere they're sold. The NAPA number is 4933 I believe...

I use Fram because that's what's available around here. Advanced Auto used to stock them, now you have to order them ($5.00). I usually order two or three of them at a time.
I like these because they include both o-rings in the kit, not all do.
Some folks only change their filters every other oil change, not me. And believe me, it's a PITA when you have a Kerker setup. But, the way I see it Fram is a reputable company, some may be more anal about this, but if you change your oil/filter regularly you skoot will last longer.
OH BTW - After extensive research, you don't have to change your oil every three thousand miles unless you're riding in a very harsh/dirty environent or you experience some kind of thermal breakdown like I did when the bike almost overheated in traffic. I change it typically every 5k miles most of the time.

Personally, I go along with Crazy Steve. NAPA filters are made by Wix and they're first quality. Robert, you can find the same thing at CARQUEST in your area, it's a similar or same part number.

I don't hold much regard for FRAM. Why? Just take one apart.

If you buy filters at CARQUEST, specify the "blue line". "Red line" is their budget priced stuff. Part Number 89933.

Bottom pic is FRAM, top is WIX. Just from the pictures WIX has more pleats.

                Hi Marty,
We don't have CarQuest around here but we have Pep Boys, Napa, etc. I'll inquire abour those Wix Blue line types.
                Thanks

PS - Just found them at Bennet Auto Supply, a local chain. Woo, Hoo !!!

                  Cobia,

You want NAPA GOLD. It's the same as CARQUEST BLUE. Either way, it's a first quality WIX filter.

+1 on the above.... I quit using Fram a long time ago as they really aren't that good a filter IMO. To give you an idea of their quality, Harley made some sort of deal with Fram in '04 to have them furnish the air filter elements in their 'Screaming Eagle' hi-po air cleaners. HD had been using K&N elements, that had a proven track record of increasing power as well as being durable; I assume HD got a better price and promises from Fram that the new filter would give equal performance. Well, it didn't work out too well...

The Fram-furnished elements quickly got a poor reputation as owners were finding that they were disintegrating in use; they'd pull the filter cover off and find large chunks of the filter gone, sucked through the motor. They 'improved' the filter to stop that, but lost most of the performance advantage, so the SE filters are no longer a desired replacement. I've heard rumors that HD wanted to go back to the K&N filters after their contract with Fram expired, but K&N told them 'sorry....'

I have a cpuple buddies that used to use Fram in some of their hot rods, samegeneral style oil filter as the XS and they both at roughly the same time had their filters magically disintegrate similarity to the SE air filters. They changed to better filters and changed them about every 100 miles for a bit after that. One ended up with a hashed bottom end after about 600 miles cause the oil gallies to the bearings was clogged by a chunk of filter paper....Fram said tough sh!t. Other guy made out ok.

WIX makes NAPA's filters, and yes, that's the right NAPA number. Take any WIX number and drop the first digit and you have the NAPA number.
