John and Phil, you guys are funny!!
The weather got COLD a few days ago and it started making this kinda squealing noise. I thought it was just the cold making act up. (I kinda remember it doing stuff like that before last winter)
So, I have (on a few occasions) exceeded the 85 on the dial, but not by much.
I guess 31 years and over 82,000 miles its time was up.
So, not only am I looking for a new speedo, I also need a needle for my 80SG tach.
The search begins....

If you want to go really fast, find one of those 220 kph Canadian units.
hey phil,
our ones over here go to 240km/h,
now if only my bike was red,

240km/hr ?!?!? I think my bike would fall apart at that speed and I'd probably need 1.21 jigawatts of power to make it go too.
Alright you guys.... You're funny.
Seriously, are all the standard (78-81) speedos compatable? Plug and Play?
How about one from an 850/750/650 ?
Just trying to broaden my search criteria that way I know what will work and what won't.
Thanks for the laughs.

I am almost certain that any year or model XS11 tach and speedo will interchange from a wiring aspect. Of course, if you go round from a special instead of the square form a a Standard you will most likely need to do something with the mount.
And BTW, be very carefull with those Jigawatts of power, If you get all that and break 88 MPH I hear folks from Virginia have made it back up to 1985!!

If its from an XS its compatible. The speedo gears are same in all and I know some run a speedo from an XS400 or 140 mph from a 750/850. If you use one from 400 you need whole assembly since they had no square standard style.

That cold did it in. If you heard a squealing noise, the rotor and cup was touching very slightly. I've seen them grab in these situations, which causes the needle to be very violently jerked around, leading to it breaking against the stop. My old speedo did pretty much the same thing last winter. Strangely enough, I have a "new" gauge cluster on my bike today...
And it doesn't help that after 30+ years of UV, oxidation and vibration the plastic needles are about as brittle as they can possibly be. I'm kind of surprised that flash photography doesn't break more of them from the extra photons hitting it!
So it got colder the last couple of weeks and wouldn't you know it, the whole thing grenaded on me!
I'm riding in to work, (about 30F) and it's squealing a little and working okay, (if you can figure out how fast by looking at the nub)
and next thing I know, the whole thing is spinning around like the second hand on a stop watch. (Just faster)
Okay. At least the Odometer is still working and I can use it to see how far I've gone. (for tank fill ups)
Riding it home from work that day and next thing I see is that it's all black on the odometer numbers. (can't see them any more.) It's like they're covered in graphite or something.
(I think, this is bad.... I look at the numbers and they're rotating backwards!
Like I'm going in reverse or something.
So, now I've got less miles on my bike when I get home than I had when I left work.
Weird part is, the self cancel signals still work. I guess that little reed switch in there is 'upstream' of the speedo/odometer gears which are now TOAST!.
Time to save up some $ for the replacement.
At least I can use the Tach to judge/guess at how fast I'm going.

Use the tach for speed idicator.........got for practice anyways........4K is 60mph in fifth.....bout 62 for the Standard......5K rite at 75 on the Standard, so on and so on. Was a chart on here many years ago for calculations, but haven't a clue of thread title now......slept since then, plus CRS...........
