  • Special fork covers

I know some guys are having trouble finding decent fork covers for a special.
The older ones are mostly too pitted &/or rusty to save.

I've found that the XS850 fork cover is exactly the same one. And, there are a bunch of them on EBAY. Some look pretty nice. There are chrome & MNS ones available.

There is even a BRAND NEW ONE (chrome) on there for thirty some bucks.Just for info.
    Just search XS850 on EBAY.

    Really?!!?

Have you tried this swap yet?
The part numbers for the covers are different.
1100 specials are listed as 3H3-23122 and the 850's are 3J2-23122.
If they're the same size why would Yammy give them different part numbers?

If you're talking about the emblem, then yeah # 2M0-23395
is the same for the 650,750,850 and 1100 specials

        done it part II

I believe they designate parts for different models with that models prefix, even when they're the same part. I've got drive wheels & front wheels on my 11's that were listed for 850s as well.
The 850 stuff on ebay doesn't sell like 11 stuff does, & is usually cheaper.
Won't work for everything, of course, but lots of stuff. The finds are when the seller only lists the part for an 850. Lots of them are listed for both. The wheels were a bolt on as was the for cover.

That brand new one is still listed.

          Hi Tom,
that's the chrome trim piece with a YAMAHA badge on it that hides the lower triple tree?
Don't the different fork tube diameters on the XS750/850/1100 make a difference?
I know I had to trim my Special's trim piece to make it fit over the Standard lower 'tree when I hybridized my forks.

Fred, that would probably be due to the standard and special tubes are different. I guess the special tubes on the 850 and 1100 are similar (if not the same)

Tom, Thanks a whole bunch. It's always great to find 'extra' places to get parts for these bikes.
I'll probabaly start looking now at 850 stuff too.

I seem to recall a few years ago I picked up an oil cooler (and adapter) off ebay. It bolted right up to my 80G. I guess it was from an 850!

Then again, it could have came off an 81H.

It looks like the diff part number could be that the 850 cover doesn't have the thread boss for the reflectors. If that's the only diff then????

                80 And 81 don't have the reflectors.

Perhaps not, but the parts fish illustrations(11sg) show the boss with a 3h3 part number. The 850 (sg)pics do not. I cant say why... Those sneaky yam peeps.

I do have an SG in pieces somewhere , someday(mayby) I'll look. I do love a mystery.

I was just going by the illustrations, the reflectors may screw into the triple tree. My SF is not home right now to look. If those 850 covers work it will be great for us.

Hey, sorry guys,I forgot. Its been about a year since I put 1 on my SF.
You do have to ream the tube opening just a hair. & you can't use the reflectors.
So, it's not for a restoration, just for a driver to look good.
