  • Carb mod with pods ?

Tearing down the carbs tomorrow now that I have them off, cleaning time, I plan on using the pod air filters afterwards, what if any internal mods/adjustments and jet changes should I start with since I'll be losing the air box and already have them tore apart, will still be using stock exhaust for now. 79 XS1100 SF

    Hey School,

Have you seen the jetting guide in the MISC forum? I ran 4-1 pipes with stock air box on mine for many years back when I didn't know much! After my rebuild/top end little big bore kit, and Pod filters, I used the guide, went up 3 sizes, and it works well. You've still got OEM pipes, so you probably won't need to go up as much, but won't really know until you actually put them on and then monitor your plug color, as well as throttle response, both bottom and top end.

Also, what PODs are you going to be putting on? There's notes regarding problems with the inexpensive EMGO brand and their prominent mounting lip, vs. the OVAL style you can get from PNM and MikesXS. Several folks have found using a velocity stack type mount for the carbs between the filter can help straighten the air flow into the carbs similar to the inner tubes of the OEM airbox. YMMV

I haven't decided what type as of yet, just in the planning stage, this bike is a winter project and hoping I'll have it somewhat ready by rally time. I'll probably go along the lines of using the home depot/lowes pvc tubing and rubber adapter mod I read, the only difference I'll probably do, and it's only cosmetic, as I'm not thrilled about seeing three hose clamps in a row like that, I'll use one on each end and permanently adhere the rubber to the pvc fora cleaner look....maybe, I'll experiment a little and see what looks best.

An add to what T.C. said, if you are only putting on pods I would suggest you leave the stock main and pilots in until you see how she runs. That is your starting baseline and you must work from there. Also, if you start making adjustments or jet changes, do only one change at a time. Do not stack a bunch of changes together because you cannot tell which one is affecting your tuneup.

If your pods cover up the opening in the bell of the carb there are a few ways to solve that. I used some light gauge bands of stainless steel to put the air filters back about an inch from the bell.

Here is an old pic before I upgraded carbs but it shows the SS band installed.

Nice, very nice, I was so busy staring at you fuel filters and breather mods, I forgot to look at the bands, Yeah I plan on making stacks that doesn't cause the interference. Thanks!

depending on what pods u want to use,
            om my other bike
i used foam uni pods with the stock air box
velocity stax shoved inside, i bumped the main jets
up by 2 sizes and the bike runs really sweet with that set up.
