  • 2nd gear repair

Don't know if I need this yet as I haven't got the bike roadworthy yet, but can someone direct me to a thread on the "second gear repair" the search engine is having issues, either times out or tells me to try again in 15sec's. Thanks!

Thanks, appreciate it, after reading all that, it seems a little overwhelming at first, my only real fear is I guess is if I end up doing this, only to find the tranny in worse shape than a few rounded gears. I think I'll be draining the oil removing the pan to inspect the oil and for any particles it may have in it. Just hope its past 15k miles haven't been too hard.

You dont have to do all the gears if only 2nd is slipping, just do that part

Once a person is in that far/deep, because more wear is done to the lower gears, it's a bit foolish IMHO to only work on the 2nd/5th gears without going ahead and doing the 1st/4th gears dogs/slots as well! My 1st went out first, and just a month after babying the 1st gear and shifting sooner into 2nd, then 2nd went out. If you're there, just do both sets and save yourself another trip back in there. Just ask Jesse/81xsproject who had to go back in to fix his 1st gear after fixing just 2nd!

If you had only one engine valve that was burnt and leaking, and your tore the head off to fix it, surely you would go ahead and at least lap the other 7 while you were there, right! JAT!

Don't think that this is a 'mandatory' repair, as it's not. There's more than a few XS's still out there with the original umodified gears in them that still work just fine. If the bike only has 15K on it, it's likely they're still ok.

If you pull the oil pan, you can see the dogs/slots and check for wear without having to tear everything out...

Would have it all running and ride it some time to tell if that fix is needed!.........not broke....don't fix it..........worst case if it jumps and doesn't stay engaged in second, shift past to third............I and several others have done this for quite some time, (2yrs.) for mine before fixing..............definitely not goin' to keep U from riding. Myself, betting with those low miles it's not an issue anyways and would have no reason to pull the pan. Plus, pulling the pan and looking at the engagement dogs is likely not gonna tell you anything unless you've had to fix several prior.
