  • Oil leak.... any ideas

I have a 1982 xj1100 maxim with 21,000 original miles. Doesn't get a lot of time on the road. Went to start it yesterday and it fired right up as always but within a couple of seconds I noticed oil pouring out of the left side cover. Bike was left on side stand for several weeks. Any ideas where it is coming from:? Engine is running fine and leak stops when engine is shut down. Thanks for any help.

I'd say it's the crankshaft end seal which has gone. There is a fix without splitting the crankcases. There are several threads about this and it involves prying out the old seal and pushing a replacement in. The original seal has a lip which locates in the crankcases (making it slightly difficult to remove) but the replacement just pushes in from the end of the crankshaft.
