hey im looking for ignition coils. ebay has some but they just look like someone pulled them off and usually wont say what they ohm out two and wont tell you when you ask them. i looked on mikes xs and supposedly they dont have warranties on them is that true? .seems like they get you with wires and post seperate. i tried a pair of accels but they have a 3 ohm primary resistance instead of the 1.5 ohms and get erratic spark. any suggestions would be wonderful. thanks guys

The usual method when using aftermarket coils is to use 3 ohm coils and don't use the ballast resistor. Mike's 'black' coils don't have a very good reliability record, the green ones seem to be better, but you can get Dyna coils (look the same as Mikes green ones) for about the same or a little more, and they do come with a warranty.Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Pick any two

Bypass the ballast resistor by joining the two feed wires together, and use 3 ohm green Dyna coils. You won't regret it. By all accounts, those MikesXS coils are rubbish. My green Dynas have been in over a year and no problems whatsoever. It's worth spending a bit more on what is quite clearly better quality kit. I just ordered two green Dynas for my old Honda GL1000... they have the same OEM 1.5ohm setup (except with points!) with ballast resistor, I've just pulled the lot out and am awaiting Dyna S ignition and a pair of green meanies to get here from the States...XS1100F 1980 European model. Standard. Dyna coils. Iridium plugs. XS750 final drive (sometimes). Micron fork brace. Progressive front springs. Geezer regulator/rectifier. Stainless 4 into 2 exhaust. Auto CCT (Venturer 1300) SOLD. New project now on the go. 1980 European model.

If you have the 3 ohm accel coils, just pull the ballast resistor out and use them.Nathan

It's physically located just under the left side foward tank mount; it will be a small silver squarish tube. Two wires should be hooked to it, both red/white. It's located on the wiring diagram between the right handlebar switch and the regulator. To bypass, just hook the two wires together, then connect the coils normally....Fast, Cheap, Reliable... Yeah, Been there, done that! With the 3 Ohm coils, just plug the two wire together and your done. Just BE SURE there is NO WAY for it to hit any metal!(stuck way up in the mountains is NO FUN!!!) I use a bit of heat shrink on the connection now, and have no problems. black tape will also work, so choose your weapon!
