  • Luggage locks

So I picked up not one but two 1100's this weekend for a grand total of $650 and a bottle of Maker's Mark for the use of my buddy's pick up and help loading etc.

Needless to say, there will be many questions to come this winter. The first one however is pretty simple.

Are the locks on the Yamaha side cases bike specific, or will any 1100 key open them. Or do they have keys of their own that I just don't have.
I didn't want to force it and break anything, so I thought I would ask you guys.

This of course goes against every fiber of my being, as breaking, swearing, and then begrudgingly asking last, is the way my father brought me up. But this way might work too.

79 XS650 (engine currently squeals like a stuck pig.)

72 Plymouth Satellite (met an unpaved manhole collar, which it managed to tear out of the street, currently has some "issues")

04 Current Designs Solstice GT XL Kayak (I like it because it doesn't have carbs, or any other moving parts)

If you're talking about hard bags, they had their own keys and weren't the same as the Yammy keys, except possibly for the '81 standards, which came with bags from the factory. On all other models, they were an accessory. The early double-latch bags used a generic 'suitcase' type key that you should be able to get at any locksmith, while the later bags (that had hinged covers) used a 'conventional' key.

      Locks

If you're talking about the side cover lock on the left side, the ignition key should work it. They're often full of crud & might just need to be cleaned.

Thanks guys. Yes, I meant the hard bags, couldn't think of the name. As it so happens the bike is an 81 standard, so it might just the ignition key. The locks are pretty cruddy, maybe I'll hit it with some WD-40 and leave it over night. I actually have a generic set of hard bags, if the ignition key doesn't work perhaps I'll try the keys that came with that set, ya never know...

On my '81H, and on SWMBO's '81H, the ignition key does not open the saddlebags or the fairing compartment. Neither does my saddlebag key work in her saddlebags. The lock mechanism is pretty simple, and would not take much to pick with a small screwdriver blade and a dental pick.

+1......Side cases have there own key.......and originally, keys came stamped L&R. The latch on inside of case is a bent loop bolted on, and IS adjustable. Top part thats pushed swings an arm catch inward. You may get enough flex inward at the lid top to allow the catch to move away from the bar loop piece. When gotton open, just pop the lock clips off, take them to a locksmith and have them re-keyed the same.
