I bought an '80 special, a couple years ago, PO had let it sit for 15 yes, due to a skip on #3 cyl. After doing the usual checks, and cleaning the carbs, I was able to ride the bike, but it was smoking a lot from the right exhaust, come to find out, the #3 plug had been crossthreaded, and I think maybe some slivers of aluminum got on the piston, probably scarring the wall & rings, just wonder if I may be able to bore it out enough to get the scarring out? Any suggetions would be appreciated. Later 'Dog

Have you checked the compression yet? While aluminum particles might have damaged the cylinder, make sure that's really your problem. If you do have a damaged bore, you'll need to either bore all, or replace the cylinders with a good used set. The latter will be the least expensive option....

If the bore isn't scored that bad, you might get away with just honing it and redoing the rings.
Compression test will tell a lot. If that cylinder hasn't been running in a while, the rings just might be 'stuck'. The 'little oil in the cylilnder' trick when checking compression will tell if that's the case.
I ended up replacing a piston in my 80G and put new rings on all 4 in one weekend (by myself) (it was a PITA, but I got thru it)
I got the NOS rings and 4 used pistons off Ebay and I still have 3 pistons left (just lying around waiting for someone who needs them)
Pulling the head off isn't that hard, for me, it was the jugs that were difficult.
With the head off, you can fix that plug hole and get a good look into that cylinder, then decide where to go from there.

          Smoke

It is not strange for a motor that has sat for years to Smoke, from one or more cyls. I would squirt some PB oil in all the cyls and let it work on the rings over night, then ride it for a few miles and see if they break loose, just a thought If you do need a complet tear down, what do you have to lose giving it a try, could seal up and save you lots of time and $$$$
