  • Spica restore pic's

I got this 81 LH about a year ago and thought it would be a scuff and shine project, no big deal. Turned out to be much more. When I started tearing it down for inspection, there was evidence of water penetration. So I'd tear down farther until it looked good. Well as it turned out I stripped down completely and found lots of horror's. I can list them but I'll do that on my last post on this thread. So I'll post a few pictures as I go. First step was to determine then aquire the necessary parts for the rebuild. Completely service the motor and replace all internal rubber and bearings.

neext was to get the required painting done. Some of this is automotive paint with laquer and the bulk has been powdercoated.

Next step was to put the stands on the frame and get the stripped down version of the motor back in the frame.

Then mount the serviced head and covers

And thats as far as I got before my back crapped out. Working off my couch on my back, if put togther the master cylinders and rear fender and tail light. Hope to be able to get back at it again in another week

Wow!! Very nice!! I suggest locating some real 3-point engine guards instead of those dinky 2-point ones. I'd hate to see all that work destroyed if you had a little spill. Those 2-point guards will actually do more damage than good, as they end up bending back and smashing the engine covers.

Mack, the two-point guards will work fine for ya', specially since I imagine those were among the re-done pieces. My Venturer came new with the two-point guards and trust me, I have dropped that scoot more times than I can count from 1981. The guards have done there job and are fine. I imagine at any speed and laying one of these down the guards are gonna be the least of your worries, but the three-point with the addinional tube I'm sure offers a bit more support. BTW, the Venturer comes in at some 140lbs. heavier than the Specials also.

Mack, i am envious. I wish i could take my MNS down and do that. It will be a very fine speciman when done. I would like to know how you done the gold on the side cover rings, and lettering.

            +1

+1 on the bars, got the same ones on my bike, worked great when I dropped it in the yard trying to pull up on a pice of plywood to work on her It is amazing how fast the 650lb's show up when she hits south of 90deg's

                Guards

Well I'm not a big fan of the little guards either, I have been looking for the big hoop that protects the whole engine but have struck out so far. If anybody knows of one or see's one come up, let me know and i'll take it for sure. Not worried about having it powder coated, the guy that does mine was just starting out in the business and I was one of his first customers. We kind of went through a learning curve together. I sent him a lot customers since and now he is having trouble keeping up. He gives me a really good rate. Even does my screws etc.
As for the gold accents, I've sent them all away for gold plating. The badges will be redone by a sign painter friend, Same guy that did the lettering on the lower covers. His hand is steadier and his eyes are a lot better than mine.
