  • Yamaha Tool Kits

Does anyone know if the toolkits are the same for these three sizes?

    XS750/850/1100

I'm trying to get my hands on a complete set for my bike and want to make sure I'm looking in all the right places and none of the wrong ones.

Is there a definitive list of all tools that should be included in the complete kit?
Anyone have a set to sell?

    Thanks,
    Ian

I don't know if the kits are all the same, but here's three XS11 kits for sale....

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/330637110396...WAX:IT&vxp=mtr

This one is complete for a Special; the standard kit is the same except for the addition of the cable/lever to hold the swingarm up so you can remove the rear wheel without pulling the exhaust. The cable is usually the first thing to disappear....

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/250930097910...WAX:IT&vxp=mtr

Mostly complete; missing the pliers and one of the allen wrenches...

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/270830145004...WAX:IT&vxp=mtr

    Mostly missing....

The tools the set is supposed to contain are:

    19, 22, and 27mm box wrenches w/handle
    8, 10, 12, and 14mm open end.
    Spark plug socket w/handle
    6 and 8mm allen wrenches
    Pliers
Screwdriver handle with small/large phillips and flat blade
Plastic dipstick for MD/FD (these you can still get from Yamaha)
Wire hook (to support the rear brake caliper while the wheel is removed)

Some of these are no doubt 'generic' to Yamaha's of the era, so you could 'assemble' at least part of the set from other bikes. The cable for the '78-80 standards is extremely hard to find, so good luck on that if you need one.

The cable wasn't part of the tool kit, and was stored under the flap under the left side cover. That's likely why it never seems to be included with the tool kits sold on ebay.

No, it was part of the 'standard' kit. You didn't get it if you had a Special or a '81H. And it wouldn't fit in the left side cover compartment (because of the 'saddle' for the FD shock mount), so you had to cram it into the tool box. It's a PITA to get all that in there; I dreaded removing the rear wheel on my '78 because that meant I had to pull the tool kit out....

I thought more than a few times about storing that off the bike, but I knew it would get lost if I did....

This may be a dumb question, but mine is missing -- where does the stock toolbox physically go? As in, where is it located on the bike?

I just cobbled together my own toolbox and keep it in the backpack I use when I ride. I have allen sockets, screwdriver set, metric socket set, and a 3/8" Craftsman wrench at all times, takes up very little room/weight in the pack. Along with 5ft of Tygon fuel line, a knife, 2 spare spark plugs, and an air gauge/hand pump.

          Maybe I'm overprepared...

The stock tool box is right behind the battery, and would be accessed through the left side cover... If the box is still there, it has a triangular cover.

Steve, the cable WAS part of the kit in 81 on the Venturer, and as Bug stated was stored behind flip cover under left side-cover. Had the hooks on each side of bike to use it, but not needed on the Venturer as the rear fender is hinged and lifts up for rear tire removal. I just know this since I bought my Venturer new.

That's what I get for doing this from memory... I know the smaller one fits all the engine covers, and the larger one the MD/FD fill plugs...

As to the cable fitting into the latching compartment in the sidecover, that had to be a '80-81 deal, as there's no way it would go into the earlier one... I tried that...

It's needed on the earlier ones not because of hinging, which the earlier ones had as well, but because of where the mufflers end, which on the Venturer is before the rear axle, where on earlier standards is after the axle, hence the need to hold the axle up to clear the mufflers to be be able to remove the axle, which is not an issue with most aftermarket exhausts such as mine .

                      Cable

You only need the cable if you still have the original exhaust. I have one if anyone needs one.

On my G, the pipes extend past the axle bolt, but I've got enough movement in my pipe to allow me to push it down and out of the away a little to wiggle the bolt out, so I don't use/need the cable.
It's suppose to go behing the cover/flap on the inside of the LH side cover.

I never use the handle... I'll hook the cable at the FD and the two hooks on the frame, then lay across the seat (with the bike on the sidestand) to compress the suspension and hook it to the swingarm. Stand the bike up, put it up on the centerstand, and you're ready to pull the wheel. Reverse to remove...

Ah, this elusive cable! Will someone post pics and dimensions of this thing so I can build one? I've gotten by without one for years but it sounds like it would make pulling the wheel easier with one. And what's the handle do? Is it a lever? Foreda, I see your offer, but I would like to swage one up just to see if I can. And with using this cable, do you need to remove the hard bags? That is a big PITA I'd love to go around.
