I had a guy write me, and he was looking for a v/r for an XS850,and he asked if a regulator from an XS11 would work on an XS850. Has anybody tried this swap, or have any experience with with swapping them over? How about the regulator from an XJ11? Will it work on an XS11, if so would it work on an XS850? I know the XJ has a different alternator set up than the XS, but they both do the same thing, but do they do it in the same manner?
    Thanks in advance.

    FWIW...

From the microfiche, both the XS and XJ units look the same, including the mounting. However, they do carry different part numbers:

    (XJ) 10M-81960-A0-00
(XS) 1T4-81960-02 (I think...hard to read that fiche.)

The XJ unit is rated at a higher amperage (26 amps vs 20 amps) due to the brush-type alternator they use. The XS alternator is a brushless design. Both regulate voltage at 14V. I didn't look at the wiring diagrams to see if they are wired the same, but both look to have the same number of wires going to each of the 2 connectors on the regulator. I would guess the XJ unit would work on the XS, but due to the lower amperage, it may not be wise to use the XS unit on the XJ.

As for swapping either the XS or XJ regulators to an 850, no information on that at all.

            That's easy

Just buy the XJ alternator/voltage regulator from me, and install it in your XS. Just a simple bolt on. If needed, I can supply the wiring, also. Write me at: xs11parts@hotmail.com, if your'e interested and we can discuss it.

From my aging memory, the XS11 regulator/rectifier unit is the a little heaver duty but otherwise the same.

I have a custom replacement unit I built on my XS11 and it's working fine in the garage but I'm waiting for some riding weather to put some miles on it before I call it a success
